Metformin and Alcohol

I have recently been diagnosed as having type 2 Diabetes and I am looking for information on alcohol consumption and Metformin. I suppose in a perfect world one would not drink alcohol, however I do enjoy going out once a week for a few cocktails with friends. I was or am a beer drinker, but I am considering switching to Barcardi and diet coke to reduce the amount of carbs. What effect might one have in consuming 5 -6 drinks in 1 sitting, on 1 night a week regarding Metformin. Thank you
