Very enjoyable to those of us who have sussed out that much of what is presented as evidence based medicine is no more than Medical Dogma. If you like Taubes you'll enjoy Kendrick.

We need more proper scientists and fewer people who simply rehash current medical dogmas by manipulating the facts to fit the theory.

Thanks for the tips!

And wouldn't it be great if there were a few more "proper scientists" out there???

Keep on plugging Malcolm Kendrick - but you have to warn non-Brits about his humour... (As a Brit myself, I loved it, but I read a blog review of half the book and the person - American? - was very put off by his humour...)

The NNT for Lipitor is around 100 which means that for every 100 that take the drug, 99 will basically end up paying hundreds/thousands of dollars for it and putting up with the appreciable side effects... for no apparent reason.

Other statins have NNT numbers approaching 250...

One small quote from the article referencing a Lipitor advertisement follows -

"Upon first glance, the ad boasts that Lipitor reduces heart attacks by 36 percent. But there is an asterisk. And when you follow the asterisk, you find the following in much smaller type:

"That means in a large clinical study, 3% of patients taking a sugar pill or placebo had a heart attack compared to 2% of patients taking Lipitor."

The placebo is almost as effective, costs MUCH less and has no side effects... I vote for the placebo.
