Hi there,

I have PCOS and I have been taking Metformin (2000 mg) for 3 monthes or so. I have not noticed any weight loss without following my low carb regime. I am at the upper limit of the med so this is by no means a magic pill for weight loss.

Hi aprilw,

My doctor prescribed Metformin for me about 5 years ago for weight loss reasons (couldn't lose weight on any program after having my 2nd child)...anyhow...I was told to follow a low carb diet along with the medication...not to expect anything too drastic. basically he said that if I didn't follow low carb then I could expect to lose maybe 1lb/month. He sent me to an endocrinologist (sp?) who recommended the low carb diet as an additional helpful tool. At that time I was leary of low carb (arghhh - so silly LOL) and stuck to Weight Watchers and the Metformin and took off 30lbs in 3 months.

After having our 3rd child (3 yrs. ago) and not being able to lose weight...putting on 100lbs in about a year...it's been discovered that I do have insulin resistance and I'm on Metformin again. Once again, my doctor told me not to expect any drastic weight loss from this...it's just to help make my body respond to insulin more efficiently.

Hope this helps!

I was diagnosed with PCOS 5 years ago. I was put on birth control pills which i later found out do nothing but mask the symptoms adding more hormones to an already hormone chaotic body! Where i live there is only one specialist who deals with PCOS but he is very pricey, all other Drs just give me the "lose weight. eat healthy and exercise" crap! What many people dont understand is that for women for PCOS, its not that simple. I have done alot of research into different treatments for PCOS and i finally decided to start Metformin 2 days ago. I am taking 500mg 3x daily and eating small healthy meals every 3 hours. So far, apart from headaches (which i am told will pass after a few weeks) i feel fine. If the headaches dont subside i may lower my dosage to 100mg 2x daily. I am looking to lose more weight but mostly hoping that i will get my period for the first time in 5 years, without hormonal medication!

I've cut out bread, except for the ocassional slice of whole wheat, along with pasta, potatoes etc. I plan to continue taking metformin. The ill effects I initally experienced have pretty much subsided. Woohoo.

Default Glucophage not diabetic, not PCOS

I have started using Glucophage 3 days ago. I am also not Diabetic and also do not suffer from PCOS.

Up to now, my eating has been very controlled. I use to binge on high carb meals frequently and have had significant trouble with keeping my weight down. Since the birth of my son I have picked up 6 dress sizes.

I have not really noitced any side effects other then a bit of bloatedness, its managable. I am also very calm, which I am not sure if this ids due to the clucophage.

I am hoping that I can atleast carry on eating the way I am as I do not have any craving for heavy carb meals or sugary treats. Im sure if I carry on eating like this my wieght will come down. I currently wiegh 346 pounds.

I am hoping to keep in touch with poeple going through the same.

Hi All, just to give some feedback.

I have currrently lost 6 pounds. I have had very little side effects. I also consulted my GP about Glucophage as I was a bit skittish at first. He has reassured me that there is very little to worry about. With regards to the most serious side effect, Gluphage like most medications, will only bring on Lactic Acidocis when a massive amount is consumed.

Other then that I feel exceptional, I am calmer, my headaches are gone and other then Christmas day, I have harldy consumed any sugars or fatty foods.

The only discomfort that I have endured is the bloatedness as mentioned in my previous thread.

Hello. I joined this forum in hopes of finding some advice. While out of the country for a family funeral, I was speaking to my aunt about my ongoing GI problems and frustrations. Over the past two years, I have been to the doctor several times, done all kinds of lab work and everything would come back normal. Over these last 2 years, I have also gained 15-20 lbs and lost 0 despite doing 1 hour of cardio per day 5 days per week. Every time I ate, I would become immediately bloated, regardless of the meal. Had constant stomach pains, always feel tired and feel like I may be starting to become depressed. My periods have also gotten worse over the past few years. Extremely heavy and painful, and sometimes I am not even able to get out of bed.

She then mentioned that her daughter had the same problem, but found great resolve using the Glucophage. She suggested I try it and gave me some. Now, I know what everyone is thinking, why would I take it unless prescribed by a doctor? Well, I figured, with her being a chemist, and since I had already been to plenty of doctors with no resolve, why not give it a try.

I just started taking 450mg twice daily. Once with breakfast and the other with lunch. Almost immediately I could feel the difference. For the first time in years, I was able to have a meal, and not look immediately like I was 8 months pregnant. I also did not experience any stomach pains as I usually would after meals. I also don't feel as sluggish as I normally had been.

I'm not sure this will work or not, but as of now, it's been a blessing. If weightloss comes with it, it will be an added bonus, but as of now, I'm glad I've been able to eat again without feeling sick to my stomach. I have scheduled an appointment with yet another doctor to let him know what I'm taking, to see what his opinion is.

I'm curious to know if anyone else has had a similar experience? Any advice will be appreciated.

I've been on metformin for years (I do have PCOS & insulin resistance). I was on 1500mg for awhile and my doc upped it to 2000mg. I've recently cut back to 1000mg (with doc's approval) because I felt very nauseous eating low carb at that high dosage.

The metformin doesn't help me lose weight. At least, not directly. By making my cells more sensitive to insulin it's helping and it cut the insane hunger I used to feel all the time (so did going low carb), but it's not like taking it = weight loss. I have to eat low carb too.

Several years ago I found a doctor who put me on metformin for weight loss. My waistline was out of control....I eased into a prescription of 500 3x a day. I followed the diabetic diet strictly and walked an hour a day EVERY single day. I went from a size 20 to a 12 over a 6 month time frame. In that time I survived several high stress (i.e. eating) situations like a divorce, a job change and a move. The only thing that bothered me was diarrhia in the beginning. That went away. I weighed myself every single day as well and I still do today. That really keeps me on the straight and narrow.

Good luck!
