Default I may have to write a book about this...

I'm writing this exactly 2 years after I finished reading "Why We Get Fat" by Gary Taubes.

In that time I have lost about 100 pounds.

Life for my husband and I has changed so completely that it is sometimes difficult to discuss with other people. When someone asks how we lost the weight, we don't know exactly how to reply. Saying "We lost the weight through the belief that grains and sugar are bad for human health and that fat has been unfairly demonized and is truly healthy" just isn't what people want to hear.

Really, the key to my weight loss wasn't about what I was feeding myself. My eating habits changed, the way I thought about food changed. But it was the knowledge I gained that allowed that. As soon as I decided that low-carb eating made sense to me, I never stopped learning about it. I don't assume that I know what I'm doing, or that there isn't any more to learn. I still continue to read books and articles about nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits. I keep an open mind. I visit this site frequently to hear the experiences of other people and to potentially see something from a point of view I hadn't considered. From time to time, when someone asks me "How did you do it?", instead of describing my food intake I will recommend a book.

The only advice that I can think of to offer is the saying; "You can only fail when you stop trying" (I apologize if I've quoted that wrong). I hit a bad "stall" starting in February of this year. I began to have trouble losing any weight, and then actually regained about 20 pounds very quickly. I couldn't seem to lose it. I was disheartened, but I KEPT TRYING. In July, it was discovered that I had a tooth infection (it's not too yucky but I won't go into details) and once that was dealt with my weight started to shift again and I was able to hit my goal in 4.5 months. The important thing was that I never gave up. Though I had some pretty rough days, I never stopped believing in myself and this way of eating. You never know what is right around the corner. Give yourself the best chance and you will be most likely to succeed.

The truth of the matter is: IT'S NOT EASY. At least, it wasn't for me. The food was not the hard part. It was the lifestyle aspect. When you change something as fundamental as the way you eat, it absolutely impacts the rest of your life. When you lose weight, the world treats you differently. It can definitely be a challenge. I stumbled plenty of times. I'm sure I will stumble again. I am a human being and we are all far from "perfect". I hope that I can maintain my weight loss, and persevere through any struggles or slip-ups.

Happy New Year!
