Default *Sniff* Oh lordy, what am I going to do?

I was reading other posts, and it seems most people in the medical community are violently against Low-Carb, and people who are Low-Carbing are staying away from them, and I just had this HUGE dilemma and I am almost to the brink of tears!
I want to be a doctor whan I grow up, and will I have to endure years of drilling the food pyramid into my head and never being able to support my views? Will I be avoided by my own people, and Low Carbers Everywhere? Am I going to have major trouble with my coworkers?
Oh, man, this is scaring me!! I have no clue what to do!!!! Should I just become a doctor and deal with the rest as it comes? Please give me some advice!!!

Even though you've heard about many people who have had problems with their doctors, not all doctors are that way. My husband's doctor is very supportive and my OB/GYN put me on a lower carb diet during my pregnancies (that was before I knew about the LC WOE). Just think, you can become a doctor and be a great one and one that is supportive about LC. You can challenge others to really study the evidence and accept LC as a viable option! Karrah, you have the power to do whatever you want in life! Don't let others, or their opinions take that away from you.

Not all medical personell are against it....look at DR atkins for one!!! Doctors are people too and they can hold their own belief and look at all the research that points to this being healthy.

My doctor supported my decision to low carb and just encouraged me to take a vitamin supplement. And I am a nurse and I support it...You'll be fine...and one of those great doctors who can think on her own and not just buy into the low fat scam!!!

Karrah-

Don't stress too much. For one thing, my doctor put me on a low carb diet-so not all of the medical community is against it. He found out about it at a medical conference and tried it himself. Second, the times are a changin'! By the time you get to med school, who knows what will be happening. New studies are coming out all the time that support a low carb eating plan. Just think about it this way-you will be so ahead of the curve and know so much more about nutrition than the other med students.

Ditto! Besides, we need more informed doctors and you would make a good one!!! I'm sure your patients will appreciate a physician that thinks for themselves, challenges information when it is questionable, versus simply taking every bit of research at face value.

I agree that you should not worry too much. My Dr. put me on this diet and has been very supportive all along. He said some other Dr.s in his group have concerns about the LC dieting but he studied it and feels with guidance it is perfectly safe. He shared with me the Medical world does not like change but has to learn just like all the rest of us did when we did those low fat diets for years. He also told me he has two sisters that are over 360lbs each and they have struggled with many diets for mny years. He has asked them to try this one before they give up and go foir the gastric bypass. So far they are doing well. If it is good enough for his own sisters then i sure feel safe following it too.

Actually, my understanding is that doctors receive very little training in nutrition in medical school. This may be why there is so much resistance to low-carb eating throughout the profession - "the devil you know is better than the devil you don't" mentality. You can use this as an opportunity to change minds, or at least promote a more healthful WOE in your own practice.

Not to worry!
In a few more years low-carbing will be completely mainstream and low-fat will be dead. It is constantly in the health news now and there several studies going on that include low-carbing. It is healthy and it works. Every time low-carbing is in a study it does great and it is proved to be what we all know it to be. It is not a coincidence that mainstream stores and companies are increasingly supporting low-carb.

Remember how people used to get stomach ulcers, and people on TV shows like Bewitched would have them. They are not part of mainstream culture anymore. That is the future of low-fat dieting.

Low-fat is a fad diet that got out of control.

Dry your tears and go for it. My doc thinks low-carb is great. Plus, doctors don't receive much training in nutrition.

Default The doctirs who are against the diet

Don't know what it is. If you ask them to tell you about the diet, the induction phase, OWL etc. they can't give you an answer. This makes it imperative to completely understand this diet. Have the ability to explain this diet full. Explain its benefits and who should be on it and who shouldn't. Make opportunites to conduct lectures to weight loss groups. If you believe in something hang onto it.

Karrah...

You already have two things going for you that doctors in the past didn't...

You have current, state-of-the-art nutrition information coming your way...and you have a heart and bedside manner for real people in real circumstances.

You GO for it...the tide is changing and the food pyramid of old will be toppled soon! You're on the right track and a very good time...

You can be on the front line of a changing nutrition system for this nation...FINALLY...doctors that think outside the box, and find new and better ways.

Don't shrink from debate...hold on to your own truth...(you know how to do that already...)

Ditto to what everyone else has said! What wonderful advice!

My doc highly recommended this WOL to me and asked me to at least try it out-- that was 7 mos. ago.

If you're worried about stereotypical teachings that go along w/becoming a MD, you may want to read up on DOs (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine )- just a thought.

Best of luck in realizing your future!

Nikki
