Smile Just Starting Out On My Journey

Hello, my name is Barbara and I am just starting out with my Low Carb Journey. I have tried in several times before but not successfully.

I am diabetic so I am having to do something before it gets so out of control. I am learning new things every day. I have measured and weighed and read books and did research and today is my first day of induction.

Welcome. This is a good group. Very supportive and helpful and the forum is filled with extensive information.

Are you Type I or Type II? In short, we write T2D for Type II Diabetic. Whether diagnosed or not, many people here start out with high numbers in A1C. You're in good company.

I am glad to get to know you. I was a little hesitant to join the message boards but I am glad I did now. I have been diabetic and was diagnosed around 2007 but just take pills and not insulin.

I think I can learn a lot here. I like this WOE because I don't get hungry like I have on the low cal, low fat programs I have been on before.

Welcome
A forum is a great place to find health information under sub-forums and threads are permanently searchable.

The Diabetes forum is filled with good information just by reading back through a page or two of threads: http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=45

You Library should also have a copy of Dr Bernstein's Diabetes revolution book, and with luck, Dr Jason Fung's Diabetes Code. Both good, but can also find very simple protocols from Dr Eric Westman, here's a video about it https://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf-dia...dr-eric-westman. And the diet https://www.dietdoctor.com/se/wp-co...starch_diet.pdf. and Dr Sarah Hallberg's 18 minute TEDTalk on the forum.
If you ask questions on older threads or start a new one, it will pop up to top of the sub-forum and members will try to help you.

All the best,

Barb, if you don’t take insulin you should do well following these very low carb diets, but if you want a doctor...there is a good one in the Harper's Ferry WV area, Dr Mark Cucuzzella. He's big into running, a new book on it, but also a GP using LC for diabetes.

Also a HealClinic in Roanoke, VA. If either of these near you.

Thank you for the info Janet! I don't take insulin but what I need now is patience... I am only on day 2 of the induction phase and wanting instant results already but I am learning it will come in time.

I don't live near either of the clinics or Dr. Cucuzzella. I wish I did. My doctor gave me her blessing on this program. She is a good doctor which has told me that I need to get a healthier lifestyle and I know this is it.

Thanks again for the information!

Barb

Hi Barbie. This is a great group. I’m fairly new here. Just since Aug and I’m still learning to maneuver around the threads and posts. So much great information and motivation too. Good Luck!

Good to know your doctor is on board and not pushing the ADA guidelines for you. There is good information about what to do instead in the Diabetes sub-forum. Dr Westman was the first doctor to do clinical studies based on what Dr Atkins used in his clinic, so the Duke clinic program I linked above is the simpliest to follow, with the most clinical trial results backing it. That same clinic diet is in the back of another good book to read, more for general information to understand why LC works...Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes.

I also read some information about stalls and such and it said also if one was on statins and blood pressure meds or diuretic that could cause stalls. So it might take me a little longer to lose the weight but that's ok.

If you are on BP meds, please monitor carefully. The risk as you lose water weight (sometimes rapidly) is that your BP can go too low.

https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb...-blood-pressure

Here is Dr. Westman answering questions on monitoring and tapering BP medication, and statins, etc. Please monitor your BG and BP very carefully at home and work with your doctor to reduce those medications as indicated.
