I was at work today--a coworker comes up to me, compliments me on my weight loss and then asks me how I had lost weight. I explained that I was on Atkins and had lost 32 pounds so far. By the way, my coworker is a pretty 29 yr old 5'9" supermodel type woman who has never had to lose weight in her life...... Anyway, once I said Atkins, she got very agressive/agitated and somewhat HYPER.

She said "Atkins and Anorexia both cause weight loss, but both are equally damaging and have permanent destructive consequences to both the brain and the body." She then compared my weight loss to bulimia, cancer, and anorexia. I was in shock to say the least.

But then to top it all off she says "People on Atkins should be treated like poeple with anorexia, they need counseling and medical intervention to help them overcome the Atkins disease! I am sure the the medical community will realize this soon."

I found the whole experience demoralizing and irritating. She said all of this in front of two coworkers and a client. At this point I just walked away. How can I ever get through to these people?

This is where you look at the person, raise one eyebrow and say, "Oh? Is that what happened to you?"

Or... "I didn't realize I asked for your opinion."

Or... (if you're wanting to be polite) "Thank you for your concern" and walk away.

I'm sorry... we all face idiots like this. You are doing something wonderful for yourself and there are going to be all sorts of people who want to rain on your parade. Unfortunately, now you won't be shocked by stupid comments. But now you'll be prepared.

I seriously would have had fun with that comment, but it is probably better to just blow it off or ignore it.

Looks like you are doing a good job just keep it up and maybe she will realize someday that you are healthy and you are doing fine.

Is that before or after she said, "All you people ever eat is bacon."

At least she didn't tell you that your kidneys will asplode.

I have found the same misconceptions and attitudes time and time again... It is amazing the difference in response if you simply say you are cutting back on carbs instead of using the dreaded word ATKINS... What is wrong with people!
