"Shops shun Atkins products"

UK stores are refusing to stock Atkins diet products after the controversial weight loss plan has been linked to recent health scares

The Atkins diet is one, if not the most successful diet of recent years. Celebrities and ordinary folk alike swear by its low-carb high protein philosophy and copies of Atkins:The New Diet Revolution are currently selling at 120,000 a month.

Atkins Nutritionals, the US company behind the weight loss regime, aims to launch its branded low-carbohydrate products - already on sale in the US - over here next year.

The range, which includes breakfast bars, sauces and crisps, is already available in 30,000 stores in the US including Wal-Mart, the owners of Asda. But major UK stores including Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose, Somerfield and Boots say they have no plans to stock the products.

Sainsbury's dietician Kate Arthur said: 'Sainsbury's supports the current UK dietary guidelines that suggest including plenty of starchy rich food, fruit and vegetables, with moderate amounts of lean protein and lower fat dairy foods.

'Carbohydrates such as bread, cereals and potatoes provide energy as well as important B vitamins, iron and fibre so eating a low carbohydrate diet may mean your diet is being nutritionally compromised.

Atkins Nutritionals denied the foods were being snubbed but refused to name the UK stores they are negotiating with.

I don't know why, that gave me this sudden mental image of the book charts looking like the pop charts did with God Save the Queen... just a row of stars at the top where New Diet Revolution should be!!!
