Statement of the Wheat Foods Council
Regarding USDA's Research Program on Health and Nutrition Effects of Popular Weight-Loss Diets Public Meeting
PARKER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 2001--``We agree with the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) report that a moderate-fat, high-carbohydrate regimen is the key to keeping pounds off for good,'' said Judi Adams, M.S., R.D., president of the Wheat Foods Council.
``The efficacy and safety of most popular weight-loss strategies have not been validated. It is difficult for anyone to follow a strict, controlled eating regimen -- especially when eating can, and should, be a pleasurable experience.
``Good health and weight management come from following an exercise program and a well-balanced eating plan, which includes the consumption of grains. Grains play a key role in delivering essential nutrients and represent the base of the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid. Grains are an important source of complex carbohydrates; grains contain dietary fiber, plant protein, vitamins, and minerals, as well as phytochemicals (plant nutrients that contain protective, disease-preventing components). Grain foods are not fattening and can help with weight reduction, as well as a healthy lifestyle.
``As a nutrition community, we need to proactively combat the multibillion dollar fad-diet industry that plays off consumers' desire to lose weight. We need to acknowledge, once and for all, that fad diets don't work and our only solution is healthful, well-balanced eating.''
The Wheat Foods Council is a nonprofit organization formed in 1972 to help increase public awareness of grains, complex carbohydrates, and fiber as essential components of a healthful diet. The Council is supported voluntarily by wheat producers, millers, bakers, and related industries.
