Default A little unexpected weight gain.

Hi all. For those of you who don't know me I am doing the Atkins prolonged phase 1. I am off the 2 week induction (Since May of 2014), but still doing between 20 and 25 carbs a day.

On Feb 28th, I was 187. Now I'm 191. I'm wondering what may have caused the gain. Today, my pants fit tighter - I could just tell my waist expanded. Sure enough I got home from work and weighted in... to find a 4 lb gain.

Here are my theories:

1. Last week I had a cold. So this is retained water weight from the cold.
2. I've been snacking on much more cheese than usual.
3. I have been drinking 2-3 diet sodas / day... up from 0-1 diet sodas / day.
4. I went from 1 atkins bar every day or two... To eating 1 or 2 bars every day.

I've been in constant ketosis. Been checking daily as a cautionary measure to the changes to the diet I made. So... what do we think? What is to blame?

Maybe a clue can be found if you put on a pair of skis and ski down your graph. There, halfway down the middle is a vertical face plant. What was going on there? Was that the holidays?

But cheers to your ongoing success so far, we all go up and down.

That was a voluntary experiment. I wanted to see if a week of cheating weight gain would be water weight, or actual fat. I got my answer. Gained 15 lbs, 7.5 of which was water weight shed in just a week of dieting. The rest took 2 weeks to go. I then made a thread here regarding cheating just so the results would be documented somewhere for the next person who wonders what cheating does.

Had no issue returning to induction.

Anyway, thanks for the responses. I think I will limit myself to one diet soda, one atkins bar, and a mere single slice of cheese per day.

yes I think that is best. if you 'added' up some stuff, you would have to figure that the extra is the problem.

diet soda is horrible for me point blank. 1 diet soda I do fine.
2 and I bloat up insanely and it lasts forever it seems.

atkins bars---to me there is nothing good about those. For me they are addictive . I know many can have them and be fine but it wasn't the case with me on those things. Plus they were very expensive lol.

Yes, I was reading diet sodas cause bloating. I am wondering if bloating means you retain more water. It's ironic because I never craved soda to begin with. It's just that now that I'm low carbing on Atkins for 10 months, I started looking for ways to experience sweetness aside from those expensive bars.

Oh well, too good to be true I guess.

I would think the Atkins bar is more the concern that the soda. For you want to get away from precessed stuff. Especially if soy is in it. Soy messes with thyroid function which can mess with Ketosis as it did to me.

it is funny but the things we are chatting is the processed junk.

Whitecrane, this is a red flag when you say you are trying to experience 'sweetness'

I know. It can lead you down a slippery slope so be on the lookout here. WANTING that sweetness back in your life can be hard to fill into low carb eating without it 'activating the cravings' and we all know how fast it is to go insane and off plan. just a heads up.

Thank you.

Lessara, what's funny to me is that I was regularly using testing strips and I was always in ketosis! tested daily for 2 weeks. Always turned them deep purple or half way purple. That's why I was so confused and made this thread! How can someone in ketosis gain weight? I hope it's all water. I guess we'll know when I weigh in again.

Checking back in... is it time for a stall-buster? Or should I wait? My weight is hovering between 185 and 188 consistently now... Here's what changes I've made.

No Atkins bars this week. (but i ate one frozen dinner)
No diet soda whatsoever.
Cheese intake limited to what Dr. Atkins said to eat on induction.

1-2 Splenda packets / day.

Here's my daily diet:
Breakfast:
2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon (sugar free, low sodium) one slice american cheese.

Lunch:
3 Sausages, usually bratwurst. They are sugar free. Sometimes I eat ones with a lot of spices and some cheddar cheese in them, that have 1 gram of carb each. I never eat more than 2 of those. Sauerkraut on the side. Every 2 tablespoons of this has a gram of sugar. I eat about 1/2 cup - 3/4 cup.

Dinner:
Meat and a vegetable. Steak w/ 1 cup of broccoli for example, half the can of green beans.

Am I doing something wrong? I'm not new to Atkins. What gives? Is it time for a stall buster?
