Default Acidophilus Question

I bought a bottle of acidophilus at GNC Thursday evening. I didn't realize the bottle was supposed to be refrigerated after opening until today. Do I need to throw the bottle out and buy another one?

I've taken acidophilus for over 20 years and never heard that it was supposed to be refrigerated.

The lady who owns our local healthfood store said to always refrigerate the acidophilus. I believe it keeps the product fresher longer, but I'm not sure exactly why.
