Default Air pollution and heart disease

I was watching a tv show and it said the #1 cause of death in China is heart disease. This was during a segment showing the terrible air pollution there from industry. Inferring that the bad air is the cause. How does that correlate to heart disease? Anyone know about this? I suppose the contaminants might constrict your vessels like smoking does?

The authors of Evidence for Caution: Women and statin use mention air pollution as being more relevant than cholesterol as a risk factor for women.
