Default IF question

Hello all,

I've got 10.5 months low carb (atkins induction, with a few attempts to climb the ladder and dropping back down, exploring a more keto-focused woe) under my belt. I've been stalled a number of months now, bouncing up and down the same 3 pounds depending on salty food, alcohol, or exercise but never dropping below that and always bouncing back up.

I've read Jason Fung's site and found the courage to try IF, allowing myself limited heavy cream in tea, limited coconut oil in coffee and a cup of broth as per one of his allowed guidelines, which made it surprisingly easy. I think it is being fat-adapted after all these months of low carb eating. Last week I IF'd three days (19 hours each day) and ate a snack of macadamia nuts and then a slightly larger than usual dinner. Great "scale-results" of 4 lbs down. The fourth day i was very hungry, and ate my normal low carb diet for 4 days. The result was the same bounce - back up the 4 lbs lost.

This week I am working with a fasting time of 20 hours, and am planning on doing it Mon thru Friday, then a normal LC diet on the weekend and see what happens...

So here is my 2-part question:
For those of you experienced in IF: how do you do it?
What has been most effective for you?

(I read in one of the older IF threads that moderators are limiting the amount of discussion on IF, but i am not sure of the exact limitations as I see references to IF in other discussions. So if this is not appropriate to create a thread on, I will take it to the journals and ask some of you individually.)

Thanks!

You can talk about it away from your journal if it is less than 23.9 hours, at least that's what I have found from experimentation and kind suggestions from the moderators.

I will say this then; last year starting in January I was doing one meal a day type eating (bar weekends then usually 2 iirc) I did this for about 5 months - obviously I had a caloric deficit as my weight chart shows and I was not hungry mostly. I'd say my eating window was about 4 hours in the evening.

I stumbled on a thread explaining this to someone asking about somthing else in my journal http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthre...5&page=85&pp=15

So, Give a consistant limited eating window a few months fair shake before you judge for any long term benefit or result

Time is the answer to most of this stuff, time and consistency I thinks. Some things "work" most things "don't" - too bad it takes so much time for the things that "work" to show their result - I think this is why most people fail, they fail to have faith when they see no intimidate result.

I can be like that too but I have too many examples in my life now that show me that putting in the time is the answer. It comes when it comes, not when you crave or want it.

have fun with IF, but remember, don't talk about anything more then 23.9 hours!

I have had great success with it! Do check out all of the posts on IDM and Dr. Fung. Very enlightening!!!
That is how I found out that (for me) eating in the evening is a big NO-NO. Circadian rhythms causing insulin spikes in the evening making me HANgry! So most days I don't eat past 3pm and it works! Love IF! Any more questions, please feel free to come by my journal.

I am surprised at the bounce back . I didn,t have that happen when going back to low carb. It does happen to me when I go back to moderate carb though. I wonder if you added more salty broth if it would kill the water loss so prevent the bounce back effect your having. I only have one sugar free jello cup in the evening and one Cambells soup broth or consume soup. I use the whole can though. I do that as a full fast. For IMF I use the jello cup and other than that no snacking. For me snacking is the demon and imf takes that option away from me. I think that's why I lose so well on it. You might try the zero cal approach during the fast and see it works for you as well. I found it really freeing once I made the commitment. I hate/love snacking. I am struggling with it right now .Good luck with imf I used it to with great success to reach goal this summer.

Good point madeyna! Snacking is the devil
I don't snack anymore either and I don't miss it.

thank you for the replies!
Thud, you are right about the time and consistency. I do want to give this a fair shake, and am trying to figure out the pattern that will work for me. I'm interested in the weekday vs weekend pattern for the obvious family, social and less structure reasons. I checked out the thread - I tried bulletproof coffee in the past as an alternative to breakfast too...Maybe that would be better than the similar amount of fat spread through the day in coffee, tea and broth.

Maydena, interesting thought about the broth. I have actually changed brands this week to a saltier (at least to the taste) brand and maybe that will help!

I agree about the snacking...but so far these drinks get me past the hunger. But i am sure water or plain green tea would help.

Thanks for the comments so far. I wonder if anyone out there does alternating days or less than 5 days a week with success...I have read others who now just eat one meal a day all the time...

i think the hardest thing is actually breaking the habit of midday eating.

I tried a few different ways before I found out what worked for me. Swinging to normal low carb with 20/4 eating window is what I did to maintain in august then it snowballed on itself and I gained in sep. It just because harder and harder to make the switch back this time of year because I put a few hours of hard labor in the barn every morning so I get really hungry much earlier in the day . That wasn,t a issue after the first few weeks this summer.

IF is my primary WOE. I did IF before I started going down the carb ladder. I learnt so much from "The Obesity Code", but when I fast I have only water, plain black coffee, plain green tea. I would only consider bone broth, cream in coffee etc were I to do extended fasting.

This is a blog from the owner of an IF Facebook Group. She does not promote low carb, but I follow her guidelines on "clean" daily fasting.

I'm in my 14th week and have been down to one meal a day, (evening dinner), for most of the past ~8 weeks and have been losing weight pretty consistently. I also don't count the coconut oil I have in my coffee every morning which I think helps.

I find that if I get cravings during the day I spend time thinking about what I'm going to have for that evening meal. I plan it, spend more time preparing it, and especially taking the time to savor it when meal time actually comes. I feel i am enjoying my food more, I eat more slowly and continue until I am satiated. IF has been fun for me

IF was the secret to my success in breaking years of plateau (6 years, I think). This was before the book came out, when we here on the Forum were following Dr. Fung's protocol, watching his early videos and reading his old blog.

Since then, I've experimented to learn what exactly MY body needs in order to lose. Granted, it's not lbs. any more, but ounces. I'll take that. What worked for me was giving up dairy. Very hard for me to do, but dairy seems to be my Achilles heel.

Just remember that every BODY is different. N=1 experiments are necessary, as one size never fits all.

I can typically maintain a 16:8 IF on days when I'm not working i.e. weekends and other holidays. On those days I don't have to be up early to walk to work etc so I can sleep in and skip breakfast, and have a slightly earlier lunch.

I don't try and force it though; my overriding rule is that I will still eat when I'm hungry. But that goes both ways as well; if I'm not hungry for dinner for example, then I won't have dinner either. So I guess I'm an incidental IFer more than anything. I just let it happen naturally.

As blue says, we're all different.

Thanks for all your input.
There are so many options, and was really wondering what others do...
as you all say...what works for one may not work for another. I will keep going with my current plan and see where I end up in a couple of weeks. Since i am in this for the long term, it is worth taking the time to figure out what works.

I so appreciate the time you all took to respond.
