Default Obesity is top cause of preventable life-years lost, study shows

Quote:
Obesity resulted in as much as 47 percent more life-years lost than tobacco, and tobacco caused similar life-years lost as high blood pressure, new research has shown.

Obesity is top cause...

At first glance, it looks like a "disease of abundance" but that is also wrong-headed thinking; it is really the result of malnutrition, as we all know.

Quote:
Results highlight the clinical and public health achievement of smoking cessation efforts because 15 years ago, tobacco would have topped the list.

"Modifiable behavioral risk factors pose a substantial mortality burden in the U.S.," said Glen Taksler, Ph.D., internal medicine researcher from Cleveland Clinic and lead author of the study. "These preliminary results continue to highlight the importance of weight loss, diabetes management and healthy eating in the U.S. population."

With "sugar as the new tobacco" we have an even worse situation, because this can start at infancy, or before. Western civilization and increasingly, Eastern civilization too, are all dying of what we might call Processed Food Disorder.

Based on this preliminary work, the team found the greatest number of preventable life-years lost were due to (in order from greatest to least) obesity, diabetes, tobacco use, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Yes, diabetes + prediabetes/insulin resistance might knock obesity off that top position. Where insulin resistance becomes prediabetes becomes diabetes is pretty arbitrary, anyways.

Yes, arbitrary and therefore rather useless. When diabetes is diagnosed is not the same as when insulin resistance begins as Dr Kraft showed and Dr Bernstein says that there is no such things as pre-diabetes. People get "diagnosed" with diabetes long after they have developed metabolic problems. I find this study underwhelming.

Everything listed here except tobacco is all caused by insulin resistance. Obesity isn't the cause, just one of the many effects. It just happens to be the only one easily visible so gets confused as a cause instead of effect.

I agree. And if Dr. Ancel Keys had been a better researcher, he might have discovered that, instead. He apparently did not know the real reason the Mediterraneans he studied were so healthy was because they fasted for religious reasons fairly frequently.
