Default Berbere spice -- Ethiopian or Ethiopiyum?

I'm hooked on it! First I made Doro Wat (a spice braised chicken recipe) and now I'm using it in all sorts of ways. I made an amazing soup of it with pork shoulder, mir poix, garlic, coconut milk and chicken broth, adding in berbere spice. (about 1.5 Tbl.)

I bought the sort from the "Teeny Tiny Spice company", but I'm sure they're all good, and you can make your own.

Thai food may have just met its match!

Oh yes, I enjoyed my Ethiopi-yum soup with and sliced hard boiled egg added after heating.

Great ideas, I like it too. I ordered a while back from World Spice in Seattle, they have a lot of great spices, also love their Harissa. For most there's an option to order whole or ground.

I looked it up and it sounds yummy. It seems to be the ingredients of curry but with onion powder or garlic powder replacing the turmeric. I don't know if the proportions are similar, though. Thanks for the tip.

It doesn't taste like Indian or Thai curry, IMHO. It is its own thing. And the smell is amazing. Maybe it is the fenugreek.

I was curious and looked on my favorite spice shop: Penzey and they have it and this is what they said: Berbere seasoning -Awesomely hot and spicy North African-style hot pepper blend. No salt, no mild paprika, just a lot of Cayenne Red Pepper with the rich flavors of fenugreek and cardamom. It's not just hot, it's berbere hot.

Hand-mixed from: cayenne red pepper, garlic, ginger, fenugreek, cardamom, cumin, black pepper, allspice, turmeric, cloves, Ceylon cinnamon and coriander.

There are some recipes for it online if you want to mix it yourself. I think I will just buy it. I like Penzey's too!

I might order it too for it sounds similar to my Galea seasoning which unfortuanately has sugar as its fourth ingredient.
