Question Mayonnaise Question

Hello,
I just got started on the Atkins Diet (3rd day) and I decided to make some deviled eggs. After making the eggs I read the package on the Best foods Real mayonnaise and it said it contained suger. Will this hurt if I use this mayonnaise? will it break my diet. If it does where can I find one that doesn't have any suger, or will I have to make my own ?

thx in advance

hi Xorm,

I can only eat Hellmann's (Best Foods) mayo. Sugar is WAY down the list of ingredients - past salt, even! My rule of thumb with condiments (salad dressings, pickles, olives, etc etc) is that if sugar is not within the first 4 ingredients, it's usually ok. (keeping general carb count in consideration). I'm very sensitive to sugar as a trigger too, so I wouldn't worry about it. Of course, if you do notice you get cravings, or your weight stalls with using it, then discontinue and see what happens. My bet is, you'll be ok!

Thanks Karen and Lori,
The carb count on the label says its 0, I only used three teaspons for for the deviled eggs. I think I'm a little paranoid

I would like to ask another question, Looking at Ham and Bacon products I noticed that are all cured in suger, seeing that I can't find any that are not I will assume they are ok.

Xorm, excellent questions! You know, Best Foods is the lowest sugar brand I can find, too. I make my own when I'm feeling energetic...and it's easy! egg yolk, salt, a tad of splenda if you wish, a bit of vinegar, dry mustard if you wish--in blender, then s-l-o-w-l-y add oil of your choice (you can make some fun mayos with various oils, like toasted sesame, walnut, etc). I forget the proportions, cuz I do it by look--you want the mayo thick but don't want to see it "break" and form an oil slick on top. this is the ONLY way I can be sure to get pure mayo

Simiarly, if I buy bacon at a regular store, I just pick up every package and check carbs, looking for "0" per two slices, though it's always on the ingredients list.

Mostly, though, I go to a health food store for both of these items (and for bottled salad dressing, too). My local HFS has free-range pig belly bacon, no additives beyond salt. And they have olive oil mayo with nothing but the egg and oil and salt.

Best of luck to you! Better to be paranoid than not at first, while you're figuring stuff out. You sound like a success story in the making.
