Default New Low Carber here - Lots to lose

Hi all,

This is my second time on Atkins (first time I lost 200+ pounds). This time the weight loss has to be permanent as I'm older and my health is starting to suffer.

Looking forward to learning here and sharing my experience.

-Jared

Welcome Jared
You have found a great forum, with a number of men who post here and have written inspiring success stories, Ken, Thud, Grav and more.
In addition to re-reading the Atkins book, Dr Eades had good tips on restarting and doing low carb "the second time around", avoiding the traps of "remembering" the induction plan that helps start you off on the right foot. Congrats on your weight loss already!

Look around, many topics in the various sub-forums and recipes to help you.
All the best,

Thank you for the link Meme#1, there is a ton of information in there. I misplaced my book (the 2002 Atkins book) so it will help while I wait to buy another copy.

Thank you Janet, I will check out Dr. Eades' tips and the success stories of the guys here.

I plan to do induction for several months because I have so much to lose; so far so good.

Thanks! And I agree, first day and I've been given a ton of advice and links to helpful information. Hope I can help others once I've been here a while.

Great. There is no problem doing "induction" forever if you want. That is how Dr Westman designed his clinic trial version of Dr Atkins plan...no extras like nuts, no "ladder" until at goal. Another helpful book is Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes, which has the history of LC research and that diet.

Hey Jared, welcome. What you wrote above is a natural process however, with practice, you can reduce the impact of how conditions related to your weight (a symptom) affect your health. At least that's what I believe.

Here's to getting older with you,

Cheers!

Thanks Janet. Just checked out the "Why We Get Fat" book and put in on a shopping list. Taubes argues that the modern diet’s inclusion of too many refined carbohydrates is a primary contributor to the obesity epidemic, he elaborates in Why We Get Fat on how people can change their diets.

Although Taubes points out his beliefs regarding consumption of carbohydrates, he clarifies by saying, “this is not a diet book, because it’s not a diet we’re discussing, this is a way of life." -Wikipedia

Good explanation of the book. Gary Taubes is science journalist explaining exactly the title, WHY We Get Fat.

He leaves it to two doctors to supply diet instructions, Dr Westman at Duke http://www.kostdoktorn.se/wp-conten...starch_diet.pdf. Is in the Appendix.

And simple instructions for an Obesity diet in a 1951 Endocrinology textbook by Dr Raymond Greene (Graham Greene's brother). Until the 1960s, scientists who understood the human body knew to lose weight, you cut out carbs and sugar. Every grandma told you to lose weight, cut out desserts and bread. What happened to commonsense? Who put grains at the bottom of the food pyramid? That's Taubes' fascinating story!

Quote:
The Practice of Endocrinology Raymond Greene Lippincott, 1951!!

A Diet for Obesity

"Foods to be avoided: 1. Bread and everything else made with flour 2. Cereals, including breakfast cereal and milk puddings 3. Potatoes and all other white root vegetables 4. Foods containing much sugar 5. All sweets

You can eat as much as you like of the following foods: 1. Meat, fish, birds 2. All green vegetables 3. Eggs, dried or fresh 4. Cheese 5. Fruit, if unsweetened or sweetened with saccharin, except bananas and grapes"
