Question Chapatis

Hello all. Are home made chapatis , indian flat breads, kind of like tortillas but made with chickpea flour and water allowed.. one would think they are because Hummus made from chickpeas is allowed, any thoughts?

Sounds right to me too!!

Actually I did not know that it was made from chickpeas...now I'm going to get some!!

But..I'd be careful about portion sizes as chick peas are not unlimited.

Thanks for pointing this out BUT...we on South Beach do not count carbs. We eat chick peas because they are good for us and they taste great as hummus!!

I eat it every day!!

I think Chapaties I have had were fried? Could be high in fat?
I would agree with Judy, probably allowed, but treat them like whole wheat bread and other allowed carbs - have them for a week, try to find out how you do on them, then decide. I have certainly lots of hummus and am doing fine - except for the last stubborn 5 lbs.

Isn't it funny how the Atkineers come in here and mention *thier* carb rules to South Beachers when they have not even read SBD like Atkins and SBD are one and the same. LOL!!

I've noticed that as I have read through the SBD section of the forum.

I hear you Lobstergal!!

I think that sometimes the Atkins people don't even realize that they are in the South Beach forum when they respond to a post.

Default i tried it

hey folks.. yeah i made my own version of the "chapatis" using he south beach guildlines.. regular chapatis flour has some wheat flour in it.. so i had some roasted chickpeas and ground them using a coffee grinder.. i then had a not so fine flour but it was good enough.. i used some water.. and some egg substitute as binder not a whole lot.. then i heated up a non stick pan.. used a little of the spray oil stuff.. and basically cooked them like silver dollar pancakes.. in total i used maybe the equivalence of half a can of chickpeas and made two "chapatis for the each of us" my partner and i are doing this together. I waited until they cooked on one side and then flipped them over and they worked. Original chapatis are rolled and then cooked over a hot pan.. because the "flour" i made was so coarse it wouldnit bind like the regular flour so i treated it as a batter.. I loved it my partner loved it and she said that it helped satisfy a craving for somethign "bready".. so we probably wont have it again for some time but it came in handy in a pinch. thanks for the help and advice..

Chapatis are generally made from wheat flour.
Papadams are made from chick pea flour.

But if you can get hold of chick pea flour, you can make some delicious chick pea pancakes very easy:

sift chick pea flour into bowl
season with salt and pepper
add water till you have a texture like pancake batter
prepare like pancakes, but allow longer cooking time.

And, voilá, you have crêpes with a wonderfully nutty flavour.

And you can add spices, minced garlic, chopped herbs etc. to batter for variation.
