Default South Beach forums? A plan for after the weight is gone

Hi everyone,

I am considering changing my plan from Atkins to South Beach once I hit my goal weight. Anyone have experiences with this? This forum has been (and continues to be) such a big part of my success. Are there any free South Beach forums that are decent? I refuse to pay the $30 for the official one. I just cant afford it.
The reason I am thinking of swithching off of Atkins is because of health issues. I have been sick more this year than ever before and in the long term this isn't good. I guess the sad thing is that Atkins is the only plan that has ever worked for me in getting the weight off so if SBD doesnt work I will be back! I refuse to be fat anymore.

Here are a couple:

...though I can't vouch for whether or not they're decent.

I'm curious, though, about the connection between Atkins and being sick... you mean, like, "nasty cold" sick?

Thanks Kristine! I have had bronchitis, an ear infection, 2 chest colds, and a lingering cold this year. I take vitamins religiously to supplement. Last year I got one minor cold. I will check these boards out. Happy Holidays!

Personally, I've had one cold since starting in March. In the research world, correlation does not prove causation. Meaning just because two things happen at the same time, it does not mean one thing caused the other.

I suggest a check-up before switching diet plans. My son had a tough winter last year with frequent bouts with bronchitis. With tests, we discovered that he has asthma.

You might want to think twice about going low fat if you're plagued with colds, flus and inflammations. Studies done with athletes show that higher % fat intake improves immune resistance. For example .. http://www.sciencedaily.com/release...90528004622.htm

It's well-known that athletes involved in endurance exercise are prone to colds and upper respiratory infections. This is due to the increased free-radical production or "oxidative stress" from the intense exercise. So, in this study, healthy runners were given diets of various fat levels .. 17% .. 32% .. 41%.
Quote:
Results showed that natural killer cells, a type of leukocyte and one of the body's defense mechanisms marshaled to fight infection, were more than doubled in runners after the high-fat diet, compared to the low-fat regimen. Levels of PGE2, "bad" inflammation-causing prostaglandins, increased after the endurance test and were higher when the runners were on the low-fat diet.

In addition, certain saturated fatty acids, such as lauric acid found in coconuts and butyric acid found in butter are known to boost the immune system. Unfortunately, the South Beach plan doesn't permit these healthful saturated fats.

So, try to keep your fat intake bare minimum 40% of total calories, and make sure you consume a variety of fats including naturally saturated.

Thanks Doreen for the tips. I am still unable to decide if I want to go that route.

I wish we could have South Beach forums on here....

Thanks for the link, Doreen. I'd been wondering if there was something about this way of eating that was helping my immune system.

Ever since I was school age, I've averaged about two major head and/or chest colds a year and frequent bouts of head congestion and sinus headaches. However, since starting on Atkins in July 2002, I haven't had a single cold or any significant sinus problems. I did recently suffer from the intestional virus that's going around the country, but I got it several days after it had sidelined the rest of my family and I only had it for two days. I was taking vitamins and supplements and exercising for years before I switched to low carb, so I think if my immune system is heartier now, it's the low carb eating that's caused it.

I agree with the healthier immune system. I don't know if we have two bugs going around, or if it's just one that knocks both respitory and intestinal. At any rate, the only one here who suffered much with the intestinal was the 5-year-old, and honestly, he didn't get very sick at all--vomited once and had a little diarrhea, I think a slight fever for one day and was back to his old self within two days. This is the kid who used to get completely knocked out when something like this came around, and maybe he's just outgrowing it, but I'm more inclined to think the way he eats has more to do with it. Hardly a day goes by but what he doesn't have berries with cream, salad and quite a few veggies with plenty of fatty protein. Yes, he has his carbs, too (after all, he's a growing boy) but overall his diet is much healthier now than before.

As for the 'adults' in the family--I had bouts with my stomach for a couple of weeks, but nothing serious--just the occasional crampiness and runs once every few days. If the girls had it, they didn't even hardly notice it.

Yesterday we did, however, all come down with the respitory crud. While no one is feeling very good, we're feeling a lot better than something like this ever hit us in the past. No one has spent the entire day in bed. Sure, we haven't got much done around the house, but at least didn't have to sleep all day. Now we'll see how everyone recovers.
