Default Help with sugar Alcohol please :)

Hi, I need help to know what to do with sugar alcohols, is is true like in the box said that you can substract it from the carbs as the fiber? or If I do eat something like that I need to ignore that and count them..
ex.
Carb Smart breyers
calories 100
Total Carb. 9g
Dietary Fiber 1g
Sugar Alcohol 5g
So this is 8g Carbs total or 3g total? thanks.

I would consider it 8 grams. Deducting fiber seems to be ok, but I don't buy this business that one can 'deduct' sugar alcohols.

People with Fructose Malabsorption can have the same symptoms from sugar alcohols as they do from fructose.

Merpig,Thank you, you are right that's the best.
I think is good to know.. if for any reason I decide once in a while...
When I had just 2 girls, I could manage to make more things I had more time, to make my icecream, pancakes.. and everything..
But with 3 girls, my tiredness.. and no family around.. it is hard some times.
I make sure my girls do the best, and they are healthy and little so they can handle fruit very well
That's dessert for them and well cake on birthdays, Up till last year I made them myself.. not this year..ah and of course sometimes dark chocolate.

I hear what you're saying, which is one reason I get annoyed with commercial LC products. I mean why can't they make them *without* sugar alcohols! I make stuff at home without sugar alcohols, and it tastes so much *better* than any of the stuff you can buy in the store, so that gives me a double whammy for avoiding prepared foods. But no mainstream food manufacturers seem able to avoid them. Though you can buy awesome chocolate chips at www.carbsmart.com that are sweetened only with sucralose. Why can't more folks do something like that?

Here's an eye-opening article on sugar alcohols (which are neither, really): http://www.phlaunt.com/lowcarb/19059967.php

Great link aj. I never fell for the Dreamsfield spin. I just use thin ribbons of cabbage cooked in butter if I need a noodle type item for a recipe. Do you know how many heads of cabbage you can get for the cost of Dreamsfield? LOL

I think it's because they want the volume that they provide.

Anyway, I subtract all of erythritol, half of mannitol, and none of maltitol, sorbitol or lactitol.

From that site:

But there's an even bigger problem with Dreamfields pasta, and that is that the portion size is 2 oz. To see why this is a problem, weigh out 2 ounces of dry pasta and boil it up.

Is the resulting amount what you would think of as a "portion?" No way! In fact, unless you are getting 8 servings out of the 16 ounce box of pasta, you are probably eating 2 or 3 times the 50 grams of carbs the labels list.

All pasta lists 2 ounces as a serving. This guy should check his facts.
