Default Life without Bread

Have any of you read the book "Life Without Bread". I wonder what you think of it. Does it seem to be a good program or not? If it works then you would have an easy program to follow. Al. C.

Yes, I've read it. It's an excellent book. I wouldn't consider it a "plan", the book reads more like "the science of low-carbing". Only a few pages at the end give some guidlines.

The strength of this book is in the author's (Dr. Lutz) medical practice and case histories from his patients. I highly recommend it for rxperienced low-carbers who have read some basic books on low-carbing before.

I agree; Life Without Bread (first published in 1967) adds a lot to low-carbing due to Dr. Lutz's experience with it from his medical practice perspective.

His second book, Sick Stomach, Sick Bowels, was published in 1995, and relates his experience a step further in treating various disorders with lowcarb. It was never published in English, I don't believe, but is available for free online in German.

Try the "No Grain Diet" by Dr. Joseph Mercola for a grain free life.
He's very focused about how life can be wonderful without bread.
His anti-stress exercises are just the thing when you feel you NEED a fix of carbos.

Joy is in the Journey.

I just read the book last week, and started LC at the same time. Although, I'm confused about "Utilizable Carbohydrate". I couldn't quite understand how to calculate that. Finally, I just figured that a utilizable carbohydrate is the same as a Net carbohydrate (carb - fiber). Am I correct?

Other than that, I thought the book was great, very eye opening.

Does anyone actually follow the plan in this book?

I am reading the book and thinking of switching over from the plan I just started. It seems to be more liberal with carbs.

i am on the life without bread plan...it is sooo simple..it allows 72 carbs a day, which lutz believes is the magic number for health. may not lose weight as fast as atkins but it is much easier, especially for us older folks. it is working for me....1 or 1 and one half pounds a week..here is my menu; 1 cup greek yogurt with one half cup unsweetened applesauce for breakfast..i piece sara lee wholegrain bread, 7 carbs, toasted with butter..eggs with ham, bacon, or whatever with 8 ounces of v8 juice...salmon, tuna, or egg salad on 2 wasa crisp breads which are 4 carbs each..sauteed spinach or avacado, spinach salad, and for dinner, choice of meat, onehalf cup potato with sour cream, vegie of choice..in the evening i have 4 ounces wine or tea with splenda..if i am still hungry, which usually i'm not, i have cheese or a handful of nuts..luck to you all.
