Question Nitrates in urine??

Hi,

I have been doing LCHF diet now for 6 days and tested my urine today to find I am in ketosis! I am delighted but the test also showed nitrates.

I am a nurse so realise that this can be an indicator of infection but there were no leucocytes or blood so was wondering if this was also a side effect of the diet?

Good question. I don't know. Suggestion; continue to test over time.

What test kit are you using?

Hi,

Thud123 I am using urinalysis strips that we use at work as I manage a nursing home, Siemens I think.

teaser, I am not sure. If it continues I will start looking into that but for now I want to get to grips with the basics of the diet.

Thank you for the advice,

Jo

Those urine strips test for Nitrites, not nitrates.

Bacteria convert nitrates to nitrites (but humans dont)... so ..
it can be a sign of a UTI, but alone without
- symptoms (dysuria, frequent urination)
- blood in urine
- leukocytes in urine.

it probably means nothing.

Without symptoms, at worst it would be called asymptomatic bacteruria and those don't get treatment.

The vast majority of UTIs are "not hard to diangose"

Note: Not all bacteria do the ates to ites conversion but E Coli, Klebsiella and Proteus do. Most UTIs are E.coli
