Default What do ya'll eat before lifting weights?

I've been eating steel cut oats about 2 hours prior, but the more I think about it, maybe 2 hours isn't enough time for that to provide the necessary energy, as it is supposed to take longer to break down and what not. Thinking I might switch to protein powder and a piece of fruit about an hour prior.....I've read lots of opinions on differing sites, but not too much scientific evidence as to what would be most beneficial.

Input much appreciated,thanks!

At the moment I eat nothing before either weights or cardio

I'm half considering looking at starting taking whey or casein before hand but not too sure.

Oh yeah, I do all my workouts first thing in the am, so I really haven't had anything to eat since my casein shake before bed the night before.

This morning I had half a bagel and a ton of cottage cheese. I felt *great*!

Dunno, maybe it's cheating, but I find the simple carbs to be really effective before lifting. I eat a small bagel or a piece of bread half an hour before starting, and wham--ready to go.

BFL says you can do both cardio and resistance empty for maximum fat burn... but yeah, I'll probably start doing whey to minimise the bad catabolism.

i totally can't comment on BFL but i know that it makes no sense to lift on an empty tank.

you've been TOLD, mister! what about something a little heavier - eggs? whey might not hold ya.

I cannot lift empty, it makes me--literally--sick. The same workout done after a 50g protein/25g glucose shake, is no problem. I occasionally bump the glucose up to 30 or even 40g with no ill effects.

When I'm doing cardio, I generally do it first thing in the AM and empty.

I was lifting very early morning on empty stomach, but started to take 1/2 scoop protein and lately have been taking 1 whole scoop, all with about a tablespoon of either DAG oil, olive oil, or virgin coconut oil. I don't really notice ANY difference in strength or endurance. but do it as an anti-catabolic thing.

Emily - do you think the protein pre W/O helps? I do a 20-40g higher carb snack for the glucose, but usually do the protein shake after.

Am interested in your thoughts on the benefits of protein before, too.

k.
