Default Atkins Newbie

Hi everyone!

I thought I would introduce myself, since I have been lurking among you for a week now, and finally joined yesterday.

I started yesterday, doing Atkins, and my goal is to reduce my weight by half (which explains my lilttle avatar). I have actually been seeing a nutritionist as a means to be approved for weight loss surgery, but the nutritionist route isn't doing me any good, and I am now terrified of WLS. I know from the past that Atkins works for me, so I am returning to my roots, in a way.

(The nutritionist, in an effort to get me "ready" for WLS, wants me to eat a maximum of 1500 calories and no more than 10% fat. I was constantly hungry and I gained fifteen pounds.)

I had all but forgotten how delicious butter was...and salads that are more substantial than lettuce and cucumber.

I have a long road ahead of me, but I am ready to taccle it, one meal at a time.

Michelle

Welcome back to Atkins. Maybe you've already read this, but if you haven't, Gary Taubes Why We Get Fat and What to Do About It will tell you WHY a low carb diet works so much better than low calorie. I don't know if you'll be continuing your appts with the nutritionist, but if you are, you will have good ammunition to fight her Low Fat Dogma. Also, low carb is generally the diet recommended to reduce and maintain your weight following WLS; why not just lose and maintain this way and skip the surgery?

All the best to you.

Liz, thank you. I will not be continuing with the nutrionist, and I have already decided against the sugery. It's too scary to me. I would rather try the thing I know works, low-carb, if I will only work AT it.

That's great, Michelle. You will get lots and lots of support here. I think the key to Low Carb is to commit to it as a lifestyle, and that takes time. Take it one day at a time, enjoy the weight loss AND how much better you feel overall. I look forward to following your progress!

Hi Michelle!! There are so many tools and available to us now, and support and I believe it is really up to me if this works or not. My BF went through the bariatric surgery and lost 180lbs!!! Every time she had a mouthful of something she wqsn't supposed to eat, she threw up, if she ate a little bit too much she felt awful...anyway, 5 years later, she has gained all of it back!!
I too had seriously thought about getting a lapband, but I know that I need to fix what has gotten me here, and no surgery is going to do that...
Welcome to the journey, we're all headed in the right direction.
