Question ? from newbie to PP switching from Atkins

I'm new to PP but not low carbing. I've been doing Atkins with great sucess but I'm finding it hard to stay with it so I decided to try another low carb plan. My sister gave me the PP book to read and it sounds like exactly what I was looking for. My question is: In Atkins you count the carbs in cheese and eggs in your daily total. Do I do this in PP also? If so how many carbs are in egg whites?

HI MMicky!

I count all the foods I eat on PP...what I do at the end of the day, is subtract fiber carbs and sugar alcohols from the total carb count to give me the Effective Carb Count (ECC or NET carbs).

Example:
Carbs: 45
Fiber: 15
Alcohol: 5
Net carbs or ECC=25

Using fitday.com you can find out what the egg white carb count is.. cause it will depend on the size egg, or amount of whites...( 1 egg white, cooked=0.339g carb)

Some people dont count the carbs in a serving of lettuce, that is strictly up to you, I imput everything.

Hope this answers your questions, and welcome to PP!

Only have a second to reply. Yes, you can count everything if you like.

The most success I've ever had with PP was when I did it clean, by the book, the very first time. I lost something like 20 pounds in a matter of months.

Use the food charts and the menu form in the book. Like this:

Breakfast:
________________________________ 7 grams carbs
________________________________ 27 grams protein

Snack:
________________________________ 3 grams carbs
________________________________ 12 grams protein

Lunch:
________________________________ 7 grams carbs
________________________________ 27 grams protein

Snack:
________________________________ 3 grams carbs
________________________________ 12 grams protein

Dinner:
________________________________ 7 grams carbs
________________________________ 27 grams protein

Snack:
________________________________ 3 grams carbs
________________________________ 12 grams protein

Then just fill it in. I never counted the carbs in dairy products or eggs. I had about 1/4 cup of either half-and-half or heavy cream several times a week, and cheese a couple times a week. I never ate bars or shakes (they weren't available in 1999 in this part of the country).

It was simple, and didn't lead to obsessive-compulsive behavior.

Great advice. One of my downfalls was counting my foods (or maybe I should say NOT counting them properly). I bought "Carb Log" software for my Palm Pilot and I have been recording everything.

I started with Larry North in 1997 (low fat, high protien), bought the Protien Power book when it was released in Jan 1998. I did 30-40 grams of carbs and found it to be the best for me. I had my best success with Protien Power when I stayed away from products with glycerin and sugar alcohols.

I tried Atkins to add some variety in June 1998, however, I feel Protein Power is a great program for life. In fact, I am reading the Protien Power book again (for about the 5th time)

Funny thing, if you read Atkins for Life, there are great ideas in there; they seemed to have borrowed a lot of material from Protien Power ...

You are on the right track ... hang in there and find your comfort zone!

Food is your friend.

Tom.

Hi I know this an older post and maybe you have it figured out, but I also count everything minus fiber and sugar alcohols. I have been stalled for a couple of months now, don't know whats going on, but I figure the rest will come off or it won't. I've been doing everything by the book, and will continue to do so, but I guess we'll see how my body reacts. Good luck and I wish you every success. Judy

Egg total is 0.6 -> 0.30 for yolk, 0.34 for white. (large egg from FitDay)
