Question Hypo and Foods to avoid/eat

Hi Everyone,

I need a little help. Since being on this site I am learning more and more about foods to avoid, but can't say that I have a complete list. Could you help me try to make a list or tell me where I can find a list?

Here is what I know to avoid so far:

Cabbage - Raw
Broccoli - Raw
Tea - all kinds
Soy - Except Soy Sauce - Not sure about Soy Oil

Also, What foods have been found to be good for an underactive thyroid?

Thanks in advance to everyone who can help me.

Toni

Toni, I have compiled a list here, of foods to avoid all together, ones to eat only when well cooked and supplements that help thyroid function, FYI.

Soy Oil is on the list because it is a PUFA. Here's a post on why they should be avoided.

Well... it could all be coincidence. But I made a few changes and I'm feeling SO much better.

Changed to taking my thyroid med at bedtime.

Just for the last 5 days or so I've been avoiding the foods that are anti-thyroid.

Raised my carbs a little. Enough to keep me out of ketosis. I added in some higher carb veggies and apples.

Only other thing different is I took an extra 1/2 a dose of levoxyl yesterday, but I wouldn't expect that to make such a difference already.

And finally... got 9 hours of sleep last night!

Woo hoo. Glad to hear it, Nancy. How are your supplements? HypoT can really wreak havoc with some things you'd swear were unshakeable for LC people - like ferritin!

Are you taking b12 and selenium? E? D3? Tyrosine/5-htp?

Cheers,

Friday

Remember I don't have a functioning thyroid, it was nuked for Grave's Disease, so taking supplements to stimulate that doesn't really help me. I do take a multi that has most of those. Also, I bought some vitamin D this weekend to see if that helps me out.

Hey, one thing, how do you tell which D is D3? I didn't see it at all in the health food store. They just had dry and gelatin capsule D there.

I do need to get my iron tested when I see my Dr next month.

I think my high energy day was flukey. Yesterday I felt pretty poopy again and today... well, its too early to say yet.

Those are not thyroid stimulating supps. Selenium helps keeps the antibidies down and aids in T4-T3 conversion. D3, Tyrosine and 5_htp are precursors for most of your neuro-transmitters because hypoT savages those. Erk - D2 and D3 have different chemical names, but atm I don't have em with me... lemme google....

For iron, make sure to test ferriting, not just 'iron'.

Nancy, the vitamins mentioned do not just help your thyroid make hormones, they help your liver make T3 from the T4 you're getting from your meds.

There are two types of D vitamin. D2 which is ergocalciferol and made from plant steroids (the one you do NOT want) and D3, cholecaldiferol, which is the same kind our bodies make.

Hey, Toots - didn't see you post before I did. None of that 'someone else posted while you were taking your time googling the right names for D2 and D3" stuff here
