Thumbs up Cholesterol/Thyroid/Sugar

Oh my! I got good news the other day. Just before I started doing Atkins, about the end of March, I went to the doctor and had a big talk with him about my health, and most especially my weight. I expressed to him my desire to try and lose and he was very supportive. He made sure that I had a full physical with a full blood work up to provide a base line for me to be able to measure results by something other than just the scale and measuring tape. ( I am a bit in love with him by the way, he is really the nicest guy, just don't tell my man...he he)

Anyway, I never heard anything from his office, never had need to go down there again for anything pressing, but during an appointment for my son the other day I asked about the results and it was all good good good.

I don't remember the actual numbers, but I know the lab sends a scale to measure the results by, of "average adult normal ranges" and all of my results were within the normal ranges. This is really a huge relief because I don't think I have ever had my cholesterol level checked, and here I was at 320 lbs, really kinda scared to do it. But as it turned out, the "good" cholesterol was right in the middle of the normal range and the "bad" cholesterol was just below the range the lab provided.

Most important, my Thyroid was smack dab in the normal range, worried I was, because my mom is hypothyroid and her dad and brother are hyperthyroid, all on meds to control, and my paternal grandfather was a big big man, who was insulin dependent diabetic for the latter part of his adult life.

I can't tell you what a relief it is to know that I am starting off this WOE with such a tremendous head start in the health department. You know, I have always felt pretty good physically, only problems I had were dealing with the patterns of emotional crap that led me to eat and eat. That and the assumption of most doctors and people in general that I must be next to ready to croak being so overweight.

Well anyway, I know that having a good blood test result doesn't mean that I don't still have a lot of work to do, and that I don't still need to continue eating healthily and working on losing weight, but it should does make me feel good about being on the right track!

Thanks,

Mari

Talking Congratulations!!!!!

That is excellent!!!!!!! Glad you are starting off on such a great foot! You can do it! I wish I had been as smart as you, to have started this before the need arose.

Keep up the great work!!

hi Mari,

This is so wonderful news! ..

I remember your first posts, and you wanted so badly to be healthy so you could enjoy life and be as physically active with your baby as possible ... and you were already closer than you thought.

I agree with Wendy, no harm to schedule frequent checkups anyway. It's worth keeping an eye on the thyroid function ... I have what is known as "subclinical hypothyroidism" meaning my blood levels are "normal" but I was exhibiting all the classic signs and symptoms. It's been a slow process, very slowly and gradually increasing the dose, but I feel a little improvement in the last few months. If you have the chance, check out the About.com thyroid site .. for some excellent information on this topic.

Here's to continued lowcarbing success, and good health for you ..

Doreen
