Default Can A1c go too low?

Is it possible for A1c to go too low? From what I've read, I don't think so especially on metformin only, but my doctor mentioned it at my 3-month labs followup and my pharmacist educator did too. My latest A1c is 5.4 which I'm ecstatic about and is certainly not too low. I told her my home BS readings are never below 80 and mostly in the 90's.

She suggested reducing my metformin XR to once per day to see what happens. I'm happy to try that, but if home BS readings creep up, I'm going back to 2 times per day no matter what doc says.

She was impressed that I've been able to stick with VLC so far, so she didn't try to dissuade me from that at least.

No. Nothing you need to worry about. 5.4 is not low, much less too low. It is out of the diabetic range, but high for what a very healthy young person should have.

In people with badly controlled blood sugars and on medication, lower A1c's can indicate hypoglycemic episodes along with hyperlgycemic epiesodes, but if someone is eating a VLC diet, as you are, and keeping their bg's within a fairly small range, then a lower A1c is a good thing, not a bad thing. Depending on what chart you use an A1c of 5.4 is either equivalent to an average bg reading of 102 (http://healthy-ojas.com/diabetes/a1c-glucose-chart.html) or an average bg reading of 115 (http://healthy-ojas.com/diabetes/a1c-glucose-chart.html) Your doctor is clearly not well versed in low carb eating.

Thanks for the replies, which confirm what I thought. Doc is not at all versed in low carbing, though not disapproving either. Good to know that uncontrolled diabetes could result in a too low number which may be why she mentioned ti, but that is not me. I will just keep on keeping on.
