Very good website and information, but I notice that he calls himself an "Honorary Consultant Cardiologist". What does that mean in the UK? In the US "Honorary" would mean he has an un-earned degree and cannot actually practice cardiology. His Bio on the website implies that he practices cardiology with the NHS, but his degrees are not listed, except that he has a Bachelors of Medicine (MBChB) - from where? - and is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP). So does he have an honorary doctorate instead of an MD or PhD? What exactly does/can he do in the NHS?

He IS a cardiologist. The Honorary is that he's an honorary consultant to the NHS.

I was just scanning his blog. This caught my eye:

"In an editorial, a group of doctors call for “shared decision making” with patients about whether or not to take statins.
Patients should be given more information about statins and told it is safe to stop using them if they suffer side effects, a group of doctors have said.

Writing in a medical journal, they highlight studies showing that the drugs save around 1 life for every 200 people taking them, and advice from manufacturers that up to 1 in 10 people can suffer some side effects."

Can someone remind why anyone takes statins?

Dr Malhotra graduated from Univ of Edinburgh and is a private practice (in the US lingo) cardiologist on Harley Street, where one can consult (UK term) with him. He is affiliated with a hospital, as physicians do in the US.
Now he spends time on his other activities for public health issues such as that long list on his bio, the honorary consulting for NHS (recognizes his expertise, consultants are specialists, not GPs) and his work for the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. (Similar to the AMA, with 20+ speciality Royal colleges under it, an MRCP is similar to having an American College of Cardiology membership after the doctors name).

"The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges utilizes expertise from all the Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties and it drives improvement in health and patient care through education, training and quality standards. Dr Aseem Malhotra’s Academy role to date has involved the provision of a clinical perspective and input into the work of the Academy, undertaking specific projects and activities on behalf of the Academy in relation to health policy and speaking on behalf of the Academy externally on agreed issues"

That new Kickstarter project looks very interesting....finding out where the Mediterranean Diet went wrong in its advice. What other lifestyle factors contribute to the villages health. What evidence was not used.

Thanks, Janet. Another good find. Dr. Malhotra is becoming a bright star in using nutrition for improved health. There are many who are active today, and we continue to require knowledgeable medical professionals who are outspoken and relentless in their mission to deliver the message. Glad he's now got a website.

Janet was quoting the dietdoctor site: http://www.dietdoctor.com/new

It is probably the most inclusive list of LCHF Blogs and is kept up-to-date

Janet, thanks for updating this thread. It let me decide what the first thing to send to my youngest's GF is.

Her dad had a severe heart attack last month. His pulmonary artery was nearly 100% occluded, and, of course, post op they're telling him low salt, low meat, low fat, blah, blah, kill him faster blah.

Dr. Aseem has the significant advantage for being a source a non-professional would trust in that he is a cardiologist.

I think my next offering will be Wheatbelly Blog, because so in Dr. Davis.

Agree, those two cardiologists have the most accessible writing style. The list of blogs on DietDoctor have others (I think Zoe Harcombe is brilliant at explaining cholesterol) but she is not a cardiologist. Dr. Alex Sigurdsson also has many good posts on heart disease. (Doc's Opinion) and Dr Kendrick (a GP, but spent his life in this topic).

Exactly, Janet. And I don't know her dad, but I know that he'll be much more likely to listen to a cardiologist's recommendations on diet and lifestyle than anyone else's--including, I hope, his FP.

An excellent 10 min. interview with Dr Aseem Malhotra in Austrailia. Why sugar in the diet, even for those not overweight, leads to diabetes and ill health. His views on why Australia should follow UK lead on on sugary drink tax and more.
http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/cont...15/s4438033.htm

He's speaking at public lectures around Australia, 2 this weekend, plus others.
