I've done this too, it's good. One website listed squash as a food that you can eat on the Mayo Clinic Diet. Usually winter squash generally is referred to as squash, and summer squash is referred to as summer squash or zucchini. I have a very hard time believing that winter squash of any sort would be allowed on the Mayo Clinic Diet. What do you think?

I agree, they tend to be denser and most people that I know of bake theirs with cinnamon and sugar and butter. I think the summer varities are better anyway

Also, another question that I has is whether or not beets are allowed since it says "any red vegetable". I love beets and carrots, and neither are allowed on the Atkins. I know that the Mayo Clinic Diet is basically passed on by word of mouth and there are no hard and fast rules, or published guidelines. I was wondering if you had experience eating either of these vegetables while on the diet, and if you did, what did it do to the weight loss pattern? I am trying to gather as much information about the Mayo Clinic Diet as I can before I start on it this coming Sunday morning. I have read numerous websites, and there really is quite a bit of differences in them. That is why I am asking for personal experiences from those who have actually tried the diet.
Thanks so much!

I did not eat carrots, mainly because I didn't care for them at the time. I always figured they had high carb content too since 1 cup of uncooked carrots has 10.5 total carbs.

As for beets, I have not a clue as I don't like beets. Looking it up on fitday beets have 17 g of total carbs for a cup. Seems like a lot to me, although on this plan it doesn't really make you count carbs, which I've never done in the first place and still have had success in the past.

I'd say you'd have to be the judge for yourself. If its worth it to you, go for it. If it stalls you maybe cut back or don't eat them at all. Its kind of trial and error. If I ate a lot of cheese on this diet, just like others it stalled me a bit. Its all about your body, so what works for me might not work for you.

As far as alcohol goes, I think I saw you ask about it. I never stopped drinking while on any low-carb plan. I just switched what I drank to things like rum& diet cola or vodka and sf red bull. Occasionally I have a lc beer. Again, its what is worth it to you and what works for you. I happen to like drinking every once and a while on the weekends. Thats worth it to me... beets and carrots however are not!

Hope this helps a bit more.

Oh and ps... Zuchinni is one of my favorites and I ate it all the time while eating this way. Everytime I eat a low carb plan I eat losely around this plan and it hasn't failed to give me great results yet. I just then get lazy around the holidays each year and fall off the wagon.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Sometimes I crave beets. And carrots add quite a bit to stir fry. I probably won't try either of them in the first week.

This is a "no-no" but my husband and I have decided about 6 weeks ago that we were goiing to go off our diet for Feb 13, and Feb 14. It is his 85 year old Father's birthday, and we are taking him to Crawdaddy's in Milwaukee for deep fried eggplant stuffed with shrimp and crayfish! This place was voted #1 Louisiana Style restaraunt in Milwaukeee. We ate this dish once before and I think that it was the tastiest meal I have ever eaten in my life. We have stuck to the Atkins faithfully for the past 6 weeks, and have plan this break 6 weeks ago. We also are doing something for ourselves on Valentine's Day. I am going to bake my husband his favorite Chocolate Mocha Cake, as part of his Valentine's Day gift. I don't even feel guilty. I think that a break once in a while is just fine. If we go too long without a break, we tend to feel deprived, and that's when we throw in the towel altogether.

Sunday morning we are starting out fresh with our new plan - the Mayo Clinic Diet. I have some juicy ruby red grapefruit sitting on the counter top starring at me! Can't wait to eat them too.

Hi everyone! I still plan on doing this with you. Lisa, I have some Valentine's plans also, and want to wait for Mon. to start this.

So, Blumunz, Lisa do we want to start a challenge or will you just be posting in your journals? Or we could just continue to post here?

JustLissy-are you still doing this plan? If not, I love that you are still contributing your experience.

I don't know why I am so intrigued by this plan. I guess because I love grapefruit I think I will be using 1/2 & 1/2 in my morning coffee (trying to keep it to 6 T. and yes, that is a limited quantity for me!)

As for the vegies, I plan to just eat the LC vegies usually allowed for Atkins. But, Lisa, I think if you want to see how the beets/carrots go then keep us posted. Just as I'm tweaking w/ the 1/2 & 1/2 I think we all have something we will be making changes with.

And as for alcohol, you can be sure that will be the first thing I have on the 2 days off! I won't have it for breakfast though!!!!!!!!!

Have a great Friday, everyone!!

Blumunz are you presently on the Mayo Clinic Diet, or have you taken a little break and are starting over? I am (excuse me while I lick the rest of that chocolate frosting of my lips) starting on the Mayo Clinic Diet tomorrow morning, Sunday Feb 15. I will be weighing myself and changing my profile to reflect whatever weigh I am tomorrow morning. My weight fluctuates quite a bit. We did go out for the deep fried eggplant last night, and are going out again tonight probably will get a hamburger tonight. So, Sunday morning the scales will be my enemy. But, tomorrow is the day of reckoning! Sometimes I need a holiday from strict eating, and then I can go back to it.

My husband, Mark, said that we actually have already started the Mayo Clinic Diet yesterday. He said that we just started with the 2 days off of the diet! LOL

You can find it on this website under the Mayo Clinic Diet and The Grapefruit juice diet.

http://www.idiet4u.com/diets/fruitjuicediet.html

A girl I worked with did this diet and her maintenance was to be on the diet during the week then weekends off. Worked great for her.

BREAKFAST:
1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.
2 Eggs any style
2 Slices of bacon
Black coffee or tea, no sugar

LUNCH:
1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.
Salad and or raw veggies (any dressing, {not low fat or fat free})
Meat (Cooked any way)

DINNER:
1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.
Meat (cooked any way) Vegetables (any green or red, may be cooked in butter or Seasoning or a salad as above) Black coffee or tea, no sugar

BEDTIME:
(opt) 8oz Tomato juice or skim milk

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. At any meal you may eat until you are full, and you can not eat anymore. You must eat the minimum listed listed at each meal.
2. Do not eliminate anything from the diet, especially don't skip the bacon at breakfast or omit salads. It is the combination of foods that burn the fat.
3. The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process.
4. Cut down on coffee, it affects the insulin balance that hinders the burning process. Try to limit to one cup each meal.
5. Don't eat between meals, if you eat the combination of food suggested, you will not get hungry.
6. The diet may eliminate sugars and starches. Fat does not form fat, it helps burn it, so you can fry food in butter and use butter generously on vegetables.
7. Do not eat desserts, breads and white vegetables of sweet potatoes. You may double or triple helpings of meat, salads or vegetables. Eat till you are stuffed. The more you eat the more weight you will lose.
8. There may be no weight loss in the first 4 days, but you may lose 5 pounds on the 5th day. You may lose 1 and 1/2 pounds every two days until you reach your goal.
9. DRINK EIGHT 8oz GLASSES OF WATER EVERY DAY. 1/2 GALLON.
THIS DIET IS SAID TO BEEN GIVEN TO HEART PATIENTS NEEDING TO LOSE WEIGHT FAST FOR BY-PASS SURGERY.

ALL SOFT DRINKS NEED TO BE DIET AND CAFFEINE FREE.

YOU MAY NOT HAVE: White onions, potatoes, celery, peas, cereal, carrots, corn, starchy vegetables, bread, noodles, rice, potato chips, pretzels or fruit or diet dressing.

YOU MAY HAVE: Red onions, bell peppers, radishes, broccoli, cucumbers, green onions, leaf spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, chili (no beans) mayonnaise, any cheese, hot dogs, cole slaw, regular salad dressing, green vegetables, 1tsp nuts, dill or bread and butter pickles.

IMPORTANT
STAY ON DIET 12 DAYS AND STOP FOR 2 DAYS
Works out great to start on a Monday because you will have every other weekend off of the diet

A few of us are starting this version of the Mayo Clinic Diet tomorrow, and some on Monday. Be sure this diet has absolutely nothing to do with the famous Mayo Clinic. And to be sure, their doctors hate it. I have no idea how it actually got its name. It is something like the Atkins, but the addition of the grapefruit is supposed to have some relationship to buring fat. It may not work, but starting tomorrow morning my husband, Mark, myself, and a few others from this forum are starting. I have heard nothing but good results from those who have tried it. Negative comments are from those who have never tried it, pretty much like the Atkins, negative comments from people who never have tried it. I've learned to ignore them. Join us if you'd like. If it doesn't work for me, I won't be staying with it.

Well, here I am, it is February 15, 2009 and I am officially starting the Mayo Clinic Diet. I weighed myself this morning before eating. I will update my profile with my current weight, and I will update the profile again at the end of this 2 week cycle, at the same time of day (which will be Sunday morning in 2 weeks). In a hurry now, more later.

LOL lisa, I would agree with your hubby. Nothing like starting a diet with the 2 off days. I have been eating as the plan is listed, but just not drinking the grapefruit juice for the last 3 weeks because it was upsetting my tummy. But I am planning on picking it up again and was actually considering tomorrow as the day. See you all in the am.
