Default Australian Avacados

Hi!

All the information about avacados and Atkins that I find is based on Californian, Haas and Florida avacadoes. They seem to have significantly different carb counts. Does anybody know what the common garden variety sold in Australian supermarkets is and how many net carbs are in them?
Thanks!

This site ;

http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/npc/npc_calc.cfm

- lists Aussie avocados at 0.4 grams carb per 100g edible portion*.

I think the varieties here are very similar to the states (we may well get Californian ones out of season) - you can definately get Haas ones here which are the ones with the black brittle skin.

* If I say this very quietly, I may get away with it here.....this is a much more sensible way to list carb content than is done in...ummm...some other countries
1. It gives you a carb percentage so you can easily compare foods.
2. It tells you the carbs in the bit you are actually going to eat!
3. You don't have to guess what a 'medium' avocado looks like.
4. You don't have to cram the food into a '1/4 cup' - and yank cups are different anyway....

- and as for weighing things in ounces, and listing carbs in grams....don't get me started

So get youself a digital scale with a 'tare' button, put your plate/bowl on the scale and hit tare after you add each ingredient - very simple, and much less washing up!

Cheers,

Malcolm

Thanks!

Their cups are different to ours?
I've been eating my "3 cups of veggies" a day. It really isn't much!
Is there much difference between their cups and ours?

3 cups of low carb veggies is fine- IMHO you could have 6 cups as long as you count the carbs.

I just checked and their cups are closer than I thought;

Metric cup (Australia and almost everywhere else) = 250 mls

US cup = 236.588395339209 mls

- so close enough, although as I say, I have never tried cramming things into cups, weighing is much easier.

Cheers,

Malcolm

Americans have different imperial measures as well. The British gallon, which we used to have, is 8 pints whereas the American Gallon is 5 pints.

They go to the store to buy a gallon of milk, which sounds frightening at first glance. However their gallon flagon of wine sounds interesting...

Well yes, and that was the same here when we used pints, quarts and gallons. The difference is "your' pint is/was smaller than everyone else's.

Question

Thanks for the web address for the food standards site. I notice however that they don't mention fibre. Does that mean that the carb count has already had the fibre count taken out.

Thank you.
