Question Carbs in red wine and poporn

Hi all,

can someone please clarify on this for me?

I read a post that said there are no carbs in red wine. Really? Really? I hope so! If there aren't I'm off to the bottle shop ASAP! I miss my wine (I'd rather white, but red will most definitely do!)

And popcorn, I've just started enjoying the occasional snake, but then I read a few contradictory posts about the carbs in that too. Now, the Uncle Toby's popcorn I have at my side says as follows...

43.8g of carbs per 100g
13g of fibre per 100g

Therefore, if we subtract 13 from 43 we get 30g of carb per 100g, which sounds like alot, but then 100g of popcorn is shed loads, so one could surely have a cup (which would weigh very little) here and there and get away with it?

Any ideas?

Zebidee

Hi Zebidee,

First the good(ish) news.
Red wine has very few carbs. FitDay gives a 100mL wine glass 1.75g.
Just bear in mind when you drink alcohol that the body prefers alcohol to food as fuel and will use those calories first.

Now the bad news. I can't in all conscience agree that popcorn is an acceptable food on a low carb WOE.
Firstly, 30g for 100g popcorn is a pretty humungous count. It seems to me to be a waste of carbs. You would be so much better off eating those carbs as vegies (washed down with a little red wine, perhaps! )
Secondly, corn is a starchy vegetable and is not an acceptable vegie on Atkins.
Thirdly (sorry about this!) well this is really an extension of "secondly" - starchy vegies such as corn are very likely to trigger a carby binge.
So you are best to avoid popcorn.

One more thing, Zeb. You mentioned in another thread that you enjoy GC soft drinks (carb counts 1.9 - 3.4) when you feel the urge for something sweet. Are you taking any supplements to help cope with the sweet cravings? Chromium and L-Glutamine really helped me to conquer some mighty powerful cravings.

Oh and one last thing. I had a look at your profile. Are you really 7 feet tall?!

Cheers, matey.

Default Not that tall!

Hi Rosebud,

thanks for your reply.

Erm about the height thing, hell no, I'm not that tall (only when I'm wearing Milo tin stilts), I just went and amended that in my profile! I'm 5'7.5"! Nice typo, blimey, a yeti doing Atkins!

Thanks for your input on the wine and popcorn etc. I'll keep all that in mind. 100g of popcorn is an awful lot though, I usually just have a little bit when my parnter makes it, he gets through the lion's share of the 100g bag.

Hmm, bottle shop here I come!

Cheers Rosebud,

Zebidee
