Nice presentation by the cardiologist, simple and concise.

Weak argument by Mosley, and his recommendations for dietary adjustment may help some, but not me. What strikes me is how hard it is for people just starting to become aware of the fact that they need to identify what constitutes healthy eating for them. The polarized research and views presented by the medical community, pharma, food manufacturers, and regurgitated by the media is impossible to wade through. The emotional tug at hearing one view in the news one day and then the very next day hear that the approach reported the day before is refuted causes people to not act and to believe only the things that they subjectively feel good about whether based on sound research or not. Houston, we've got a problem!

I'm probably one of the few people who could pull out my journals from 1987-1989 and fill out the survey accurately. I'm still alive. How many people who ate complete carby crap in 1987-1989 are dead and therefore not counted in the survey?

Yet another rebuttal:

There’s nothing to really talk about because the “low carb people” didn’t follow a healthy lifestyle in the first place. They were overweight, diabetic, smokers, had poor biomarkers and bad habits.

Anything that disses LC (even if it's not really LC) gets a lot of press -- that's unfortunate

This is the exact same treatment a Rottie gets. A news article highlighting the heroic behavior of a half bred, called it a half bred when in the full article the owners clearly ID's the dog as a half Rottie. No credit to a good dog, a good rottie.

Yes. When he gets into the Mediterranean diet--that's just low saturated fat, high fruit and vegetable in sheep's clothing, and the long-term support for it is the same sort he's trying to refute here, epidemiology with dietary recall etc. Saying, well, we only have short term studies for this or that diet, and then that the long term studies point towards... is sort of useless. The studies we have with enough power and certainty--control, randomization, etc.--to actually determine causation are short ones. "This is the only long term data we have" doesn't mean that that data is any good. There may be too much vasoline on the lens to take the ten thousand mile view.

The supposed sweet spot in that study for carb intake, 50-55 percent, leaves room for about 30 percent fat if protein is assumed to fall around the usual 15-20 percent. Pretty close to MyPlate/food pyramid numbers. The lowest carb intake group had the highest current smoking status, and the lowest "never a smoker" status. Of course this was corrected for, and of course there's a limit to how accurately something like this can be corrected for.

Also more likely to be diabetic in the lowest carb intake group. Given the choice, diabetic rodents naturally gravitate towards a lower carbohydrate diet that keeps their blood glucose more moderate. That means high fat and high carb. If the high fat choices available are oreos and potato chips, I wonder what happens? Pure fat and protein sources might be a different story. I'm not diabetic, but I was insulin resistant, and did find that once I was on a high fat, low carb diet I actually preferred it.

Dr. Georgia Ede weighs in as well:
From her article in Psychology Today
Quote:
The field of nutritional epidemiology has a dismal track record when it comes to the validity of its guesses—more than 80% of its hypotheses are later proved wrong in clinical trials (human experiments). This is why nutrition headlines are so confusing—one day eggs are bad for us (epidemiology), the next day they are perfectly fine (clinical trials). In my opinion, this study’s thinly-veiled attempt to deter people from embarking on or continuing a healthy low-carbohydrate diet by using smoke-and-mirrors methodologies and invoking images of the Grim Reaper takes this study out of the realm of science and places it squarely in the arena of politics.

It is deliberate.

If we extrapolate our lifestyles onto the whole population... whole industries would collapse! Money by rich people would be lost! Dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!
