This isn't quite true - eating lower calories slows your metabolism so you would have to eat even fewer calories. Eating lower carbs lowers your insulin which lets you lose weight. You can eat too many calories on a low carb diet, but it is most often hidden carbs or the insulin response (it is not only your mouth that tastes sweet - there are other receptors in the pancreas) from those artificial sweeteners that stops the weight loss.
