Default Niacin doesn't reduce the risk of heart attack and may be dangerous

The medical community needs to realize that treating cholesterol is not worthwhile. Even the 'safe' niacin creates problems.

Quote:
A large-scale clinical trial found that although niacin slightly improved levels of "good" HDL cholesterol, it didn't seem to benefit cardiovascular health, reports the study in the July 17 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

At the same time, niacin increased the risk of serious side effects in patients "enough to get people into hospital, typically," said senior study author Jane Armitage, a professor of clinical trials and epidemiology at the University of Oxford in England.

Yep. After I read the articles to my SO, he quit niacin right away.

Yet another indication that messing with cholesterol is counter-productive, when eating right makes everything work better.

I am taking niacin alone and it has done wonders for my particle number. Went off for a while and they skyrocketed again. So, I have resumed with immediate release niacin.

Are you aware that ALL of the studies were conducted on patients taking Niacin AND a Statin? None were results from Niacin alone. A great reference is a book by Dr William Parsons "Cholesterol Control Without Diet, The Niacin Solution". Niacin has been used alone, safely for over 50 years.

My question is, was the Niacin the problem or the Laropiprant or the combination of the two.

The test was done with the combination of the two, so the results do not implicate niacin, but the combination.

Laropiprant is made by Merck who has had a long history of mass murder. Their drug Vioxx in clinical trials proved that people taking Vioxx over naproxen (Aleve) had a 500 times greater chance of getting a heart attack. The drug ended up killing more Americans in 5 years than the entire Viet Nam war did.

I'm sure you can OD on niacin if you take to much, you can OD on vitamin C too, but I suspect that there is some irresponsible journalism going on here.

More information and a test with Niacin only are needed.

Very good point, Bob! The pharmaceuticals are out for profits. Thus, their sponsorship of all kinds of testing. They don't wan't to prove usefulness of any over the counter supplements. Scare people off of niacin and they will naturally take more statins.

If I could get my particle numbers down w/o niacin, I would be thrilled. And I am eating macros based on Volek and Phinney as best I can. Hopefully, improvements will be seen.

I take a multi with extra niacin, and get a flush every once in a while.

All my blood numbers are in the normal range. I also walk 4 miles a day (in about an hour) and eat very a very low carb diet, and the carbs I eat are all low glycemic.

Personally, I think B3 should be safe in moderate doses, as it's water soluble so anything extra will just be passed out in urine. But I'm not a scientist nor a nutritionist.

Big Pharma has a long history of attaching something patented to a natural substance so they can doctors to prescribe it and rake in the profits. I can't blame them for wanting profits, but I do blame them for being unethical about it.

Vioxx is only one example of a long line of drugs that have contributed to the mass murder of millions of American citizens by the drug companies and their partners in crime the FDA.

It seems to me that if a Corporation is granted 'person-hood' status for political speech, then the executives should be tried for mass murder when they release a product like Vioxx.

But it's clear who is running the country, and it isn't we the people. So we have to defend ourselves and be informed.

Just out of curiousity have you ever had your thyroid tested? I had very high cholesterol and high LDL particle numbers and even niacin did nothing to help that - but when I began taking Armour thyroid the numbers plummeted like a rock in only 6 weeks.

Yes, my thyroid numbers are fine. I think I'm insulin resistant and can't live with many carbs. I've been low carb for 3.5 years and have tweeked my macros a bit. Now I shoot for more protein and less fat and have been feeling great. 100g protein, 75g fat and 25g carbs suits me quite well. I've added a few other supplements, as well. We'll see at my next labs.
