Default Hello Everyone, New girl

HI everyone, So happy I found this forum. A little about me, 5'7", weighed at the beginning of this cholesterol journey 143 lbs and now at 130lb. I just want my numbers to drop and not be put on statins. I don't see much info for women and the side effects of taking them. After a yearly checkup last year in January I found out I had High cholesterol and my doctor prior to prescribing meds, advised I change my diet completly and start working out. Adding salmon to my diet 3 x's a week and Omega 3 supplements. At the time of that exam Cholesterol levels were:

TC: 272
HDL: 85
TRG:97
LDL: 168..I was freaking out.
So I went home and did exactly what he advised me to do. I did not want to take any statins.
Next appt 3 months later:
TC: 211
HDL: 63
TRG: 76
LDL: 133

Now my numbers have changed again...I know, I am punishing my own self for eating foods I had given up. I was eating during the holidays and now my numbers have gone up again and I am terrified:
TC: 232
HDL:73
TRG:87
LDL: 142.
So I starting dieting again and working out. T25 and walking my dog.
I joined this board in hopes to understand these numbers better and what I can benefit from eating foods perhaps I didn't even know I could or could not have.
Any advice or help is appreciated.

Hi Ariom,
If you want to cut out the carbs and lower your numbers you really need to choose a plan, and get a book so that you can do it right because without that it is really hard to figure out what to do.
Look around this site and you will find many postings with links talking about women and statins and how they don't work for women.

Welcome
You have found the sub-forum that will give you information about official current cholesterol guidelines, and the components considered more appropriate by the doctors who understand the importance of cholesterol to every cell in your body. Please read back through threads on this page for various links and comments on others' test results. First though, you should be aware that you do not have "high" cholesterol even by new AHA guidelines, the total number is not that important, the ldl top range is now 190 unless you have other risk factors, and your HDL and Trigs are both optimal numbers for all three tests. The HDL/Trig ratio is what IS important, and anything around 1 perfect. If you really want to get into this in depth, read the book CholesterolClarity.

Edit: Just saw you posted elsewhere and Nancy directed you here and to the book. Her collection of info is a great place to start.
Short, simple article on statins and women. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kelly..._b_4283650.html If your Mom is having any increased cognitive disfunction or insulin resistance (increased risk of diabetes) you should do more reading into the recent warnings of harm from statins.
