Default how to start

my name is shirley and i moved from germany to canada 3 years ago. during this time i gained so much weight that i have to do something.
about 5 years ago i bought an atkins diet book and i read a lot about low carb diets, i would like to try it but i heard he wrote a new diet book and now i don't know if there is anything different then before.
could somebody explain to me how it works and what i have to do to get started PLEASE.
or maybe you know a webpage where i can find a kind of a guideline to get started.

Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution was published in 1992, it may be that is the book you already have?? Look for the word New in the title ... if it just says Diet Revolution, then it's his old book, from the 70s ... that plan still works, by the way ... but his new program allows for slightly higher carb levels in the beginning, in the form of salads and lowcarb vegetables, such as broccoli, asparagus, mushrooms and spinach. If you don't have the newer book, you should be able to borrow a copy from the library..

To get you started, and explain what lowcarbing is all about, read through some of the articles in our Tips column, click here to read it. Especially read Lowcarb Basics and Lowcarb Frequently Asked Questions. These should get you started, as well as provide links to websites of the "official" programs, for more information.

thanks a lot doreen!

well my book is an old one it is from the first print in 1977 (germany)
anyway.... i will read through the links you gave me.
than (hopefully) i can get started.
i hope i place this message on the right spot ...i still have to learn how to handle all these buttons and things to get everything going.
i sort of get lost in all these threads

The old copy of Atkins should be good enough, no significant changes had taken place in the new version, I think.

but nonetheless.....
i think i will go and buy a book.
since i own an "antique adkins" .... i was wondering if i might go for one of the other low_carb_bibles?!

could you recommend one of the books which is good as a basic info source and which includes the newest infos ?

Hi Shirleyl,

I think it's a good idea to go for a different book since you already have the original Atkins. Some plans are very close(er) to the Atkins, like Protein Power Lifepaln. This books gives a lot of useful details in the Insulin works and metabolism and a wealth of information. Since it's a new(er) plan, it doesn't have to deal with all the politics and controversy Dr. Atkins had to defend against.

Other members might have other recommendations as well

Most of us on this board follow either Atkins or the Protein Power plan. Here are the references:

Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. Robert C. Atkins. 1992.

Protein Power. Michael R. Eades and Mary Dan Eades. 1996.

I'd get both books (borrow them from the library if you don't want to buy them), if I were you. The diet plans are very similar (Atkins is a bit more restrictive in the initial stages). The Eadses go into more detail on the biochemistry of low-carb.

A couple of other popular plans are the Zone, by Barry Sears, and the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, by the Hellers. I don't have those books, so I'll let someone else fill you in.

Hi,

Welcome, you've found a great group that willingly shares their knowledge & experience.

Personally I do Dr Atkin's, however I have just read Carbohydrate Addict's Diet by the Hellers. As a diabetic still requiring some oral meds I've decided that this would not be appropriate for me at this time. Diabetics must be watching blood glucose levels & carbohydrate consumption is the best predictor & cause of high levels. If you have diabetes, check with your doctor. Good luck with whatever WOE (way of eating) you choose. Ruth
