Default butter ?

I saw somewhere you could make butter just put heavy whipping cream in a jar and shake for like 10 min. .can't remember if you add something else or not.

Why not buy butter?

I've used a hand blender to make whipped cream, and it takes a bit of time at high speeds. I can't imagine getting butter in 10 minutes of shaking in a jar. If you try it, and it works, let me know. I'm curious. I could be completely wrong about that.

I suspect a little salt might help if you do. I find salted butter sweeter than non-salted butter (go figure).

I really like Kerry Gold grass fed butter. It's not that expensive.

The link I'm giving is very comprehensive on the butter-making process. I've made it in a jar, but with fresh (read unpasturized) cream from our cow Susie.
Good luck.

My son had chocolate milk in a water bottle when we went on a hike. When we stopped for lunch, he had butter in there!

Butter in a jar is something I remember from second or third grade. Fun experiment, for 7 or 8 year olds. But the cost for good cream (not ultra pasteurized, and no extra ingredients) doesn't really make it cost effective, in my opinion. Find a good butter - European grass fed is great; organic American is fine; from a dairy that doesn't use artificial hormones if you can (if organic, this is already covered). Salted or unsalted, as you like. Some prefer salted. My feeling is that salt is a preservative, so salted butter could be, possibly, not as fresh as unsalted butter. Also, if I want salt I would prefer to add my own to the level that I am happy with. But that is my choice, and others need not agree.
However, answering the original question, no, cream and shaking time are all that is needed.

There's always butter around the edges of my carton of HWC by the time I get to the bottom.

We made butter in a jar in kindergarten. Sat in a circle, passed the jar around the circle, shaking, till it started to solidify.

We ate it on graham crackers. I still remember how proud we all were!

I'd use a blender or food process, maybe a immersion blender. Much easier than shaking it!
