Default Hi Aussies

I introduced my self over on the main board but thought I would pop in here and say Hi to all my fellow aussie lowcarbers

Only been here a week or so and I am still digging up lots of interesting info on old threads. I checked out the Best lowcarbs food in Australia thread before my fortnightly shopping trip and picked up a few goodies like coles sausages, coconut milk etc.

Also someone posted about sweetlife xylitol and I've gone ahead and ordered some of that, should be better than the splenda sachets for the occassional sweetener.

Anyway I'm looking forward to getting to know you all.

Bec

Hi Bec, and welcome!

My opinion about the sweeteners: for hot drinks etc, I use Splenda tablets. Almost no carbs (0.075 per tablet) and they taste reasonable. I find xylitol on its own has a kind of "numb" taste. It is also pretty expensive.

For baking, by far the best solution I have found is to use half xylitol and half Splenda. (I only ever use the tablets - they grind up simply and easily.)
The beauty of mixing two sweeteners is that (a) the taste is MUCH improved. Even my picky DH can't tell the difference between that and sugar, whereas he pokes his nose up at Splenda sweetened stuff,
and (b) using two sweeteners has a synergistic effect, so you only need half as much total sweetener....thereby saving dollars. For example, if a recipe says 1 cup sweetener, you only need ¼ cup each of Splenda and xylitol (which equates to 12 crushed Splenda tabs).

All the best, matey.

Roz

HI! Yep, it was me who posted about the xylitol which is the best thing since sliced bread and steam mops. Never noticed anything 'numb' about the taste ... But it is jolly expensive!
