Default Peters Carb Control Ice Cream - my verdict, what's yours?

Just wondering what others think of this stuff. My verdict:

I was so excited to see it in the supermarket, and actually waited a few days before having any. The taste is just terrible IMHO, with way too strong a taste of aspartame.
And wouldn't you know it, they've made it low fat too, because they are presumably going for the "healthy" end of the market.

I wound up sprinkling some macadamias over it which helped, otherwise I'd have tossed it. Come to think of it, that's probably what I should have done anyway. Talk about disappointing! At least I'll never be tempted to overindulge, so maybe that's a good thing.

For the record here is the nutritional panel (it is the same for vanilla).

I tried the Peters 'carbohydrate modified' icecream the other day. Is it the same? This stuff was also an aspartame disaster and pretty low fat - 5.4 g/100g( sat 3.9). But it was very cheap , about $3.50/ 2 litres. I'll eat it occasionally. But we have recently ressurrected an old cream separator I picked up years ago and had forgotten in the back of the shed, for our daily supply of 6 litres of goat milk. The low carb icecream we are making with the cream and eggs is improving. It's a lot of work cleaning the damn thing, but I was buying heaps of cow cream anyway, so it's probably worth the effort. The goats are eating mostly tree fall mangoes which is upping their milk fat considerably. See, carbs are converted to fat .

No, this stuff is new, and is called "Carb Smart." Only has 2.8g fat per 100g.

I think I'll just leave mine at the back of the freezer for the odd occasion when I feel like something sweet....as I'm typing this I'm realising there are many sweet alternatives that will taste better than this junk. Think I may as well toss it. Life is too short to eat crap that tastes this off.
I remember Len Evans once saying that every bottle of cheap, crappy wine he drank in his lifetime, was the equivalent of hurling a good bottle against a wall. So eating this will be the equivalent of flushing something good down the toilet. Maybe not an exact analogy, but something along those lines.

Verrry interesting to hear your goats' milk fat is increasing on a mango diet.

My response would be why bother? Making your own fresh icecream is so easy - and you control all the ingredients.

Cream, frozen berries, a splash of your favorite spirit (plus sweeteners if you insist - I don't) then 'Bamix' it and eat it straight away (don't refreeze it). If you don't want fruit, then chocolate, coffee or other flavours are possible with a bit of experimentation.

I actually quite like the Carb Smart ice cream. If you moosh it all up with diet chocolate topping so it's like soft serve it's pretty good.

Hi Kittn, good to see another Taswegian here! I live in Lewisham.

Come and join the very friendly Aussie throng on the Empower forum. Kat and Marj (also from Tassie) would be particularly delighted to 'see' you.

Default Hmmm my experience seems to be a bit different...

I also have a tub gathering ice in my freezer, but that is mostly because it made me violently ill, in the same way that the darrel lea sf chocolate did. I won't be too graphic in the name of good taste but the warning that it may have a laxative effect is a slight understatement for me... *sigh* I was in incredible pain for hours after eating a moderate amount.... it felt like an alien was trying to escape via my abdominal wall. anyway... I don't like it!

Seems I am one of the few that enjoy it.
True, its not exactly the same as normal icecream, but its good at a pinch.
Ive had it in my freezer for a month, and had it twice, with low jelly, and cream with my 2 pieces of low carb chocolate grated on top.
That was once, and the other time was in a diet coke, made it like a spider.
That was ok too.
Dont think I would want to eat it everyday though.

Fiona

I didn't like it much but ate it with Bawdy's Cheesecake (recipe on here) and it was yum yum yum. Can't wait for more room in my freezer so I can buy more hehe.

.... am I like other? Worried that all the low carb stuff will slowly stop appearing on the shelves?

I quite like the Carb Smart ice cream, esp with SF jelly too. Although it isnt something that is being consumed with any regularity. I am suprised at myself for showing such constraint. Ordinarily it would have been eaten by now Guess that sweet tooth of mine is well and truely in check

I was using it for a while and I actually really enjoyed it.

Now I have given up aspartame it had to go.

A pity they can't explore products that don't use aspartame!

I don't mind the taste of it at all, but it gave me terrible gas and stomach cramps. I'm thinking of buying another ice-cream maker and devising some of my own recipes. Stay tuned....
