Thumbs up sounds good ..

Marketplace can be seen on CBC TV Tuesdays as noted.

Next weeks show, Nov 5 2002 will include a segment on Beef: grass fed/grain fed. Is there a difference?

Doreen

Exclamation grass fed cows

Hi Nat and Doreen, this was a facinating show. I especially enjoyed the interview with the old farmer who only fed his cows grass,(except hay in winter)
My mother was raised on a farm and we spent summers there. I didn't realize that these big farms don't put there cows out to pasture but feed them grain year round to fatten them up sooner. This is awful.

On my grandfathers farm the cows went out at 5am (the dog took them across the highway, and brought them in about 5 pm)
Amazing too since the dog did it all by herself, must of been 100 or so cows!! Smart dog!!

So under analysis, the grain fed beef was much higher in fat than the grass fed beef, also more tender. However, the grass fed beef was declared better tasting by the chef. (I do remember beef being tougher when I was little)

Very informative show. Apparently some stores in TO are carrying grass fed beef, it's a little more $$ but I'm going to see if I can find some and let you know.

Nancy
