How do you guys make those cheese crisps from American cheese?

Do you put them on paper towel or plate ... would they stick to a plate?

From what I've been told (take that for what it's worth--I've never made them), you place squares on parchment paper and then nuke in the microwave for 2.5 minutes?

I could be wrong. I need to make some so that I know for certain.

YUMMMMMMMMM mine came out delicious! I followed what cleochatra said exactly ... I cut them into small pieces, put on parchment paper and nuked for 2 minutes .. maybe a few seconds more, and they came out crisp and wonderful.

A few of them did run together, so I just cut them apart. You have to set the pieces far enough apart from each other, so they won't go together.

I did 2 slices of cheese and ate them ALL.

I have made a lot of them, but the only cheese that seems to work (for me, at least) is Kraft Deluxe American. I believe I read on Linda Sue's site to use that kind of cheese, and it's perfect. Also, I found a round silicone mat that just fits the turntable in my microwave, and I simply lay the cheese pieces out on that. It works beautifully!

I have been making these as a staple (2 every day for breakfast) with muenster cheese, pre-sliced. I don't cut it into small squares - just put the whole slice on parchment paper, nuke for 56 seconds, drain on paper towels....perfect! Deli provolone is excellent this way too (not the stuff you buy in the refrigerated section - I find that dries out too much), but the stuff you order at the deli case. Really good flavor. But muenster is my favorite by far.

If you want to get a little fancier, here is a great one I make all the time that I found on another forum.

Cheddar Walnut Crisps

Adapted from The 150 Best American Recipes: Indispensable Dishes From Legendary Chefs and Undiscovered Cooks by Fran McCullough & Molly Stevens. You'll have to wait until your baking sheet cools down before you make the next batch, or alternate between two baking sheets. Use a box grater to shred the cheddar and a microplane to grate the parmesan.

2-1/2 oz (70 g) old cheddar cheese, shredded (about 1 cup)

2-1/2 oz (70 g) parmesan cheese, grated (about 1-1/4 cups)

2 oz (60 g) walnuts, coarsely chopped (about 1/2 cup)

2 tbsp finely chopped thyme leaves

Line baking sheet with parchment paper.

Put cheeses in medium bowl. Mix lightly with fingers.

For first batch, drop cheese mixture by rounded teaspoonfuls on to baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch between each mound. Flatten with back of spoon. Sprinkle top of each cheese circle with bit of nuts and thyme.

Bake in centre of preheated 400F oven 5 minutes or until crisps bubble and edges are golden brown. Let stand 2 minutes. Using spatula, slide off paper on to rack to cool completely.

Repeat with next batches, using cool baking sheet each time, until ingredients are used up.

Makes 58 crisps.

I make a half of a recipe using

1/2 cup shredded cheddar
1/2 + 1/8 cup Kraft grateded parmesan
1/4 cup pecans
1 T fresh thyme leaves

I put all ingredients in a mini prep food processer and pulsed about 5 times.
I then spooned heaping teaspoons on a parchment lined cookie sheet and baked in a preheated 400 degree oven for 6 to 8 min until golden brown and crispy.
YUMMO!!!

This made 18 crisps at 4 carbs for the entire batch.

Wow, those look yummy!

For the plain cheese crisps, I've also been known to just put a little heap of shredded cheddar cheese on a plate and nuke it.

I make these out of the Kraft Deluxe 2% slices by cutting each slice into 25 squares and nuking it for 1 minute 30 seconds on parchment. It makes them sort of like Cheezits. The Kraft 2% Deluxe is the only one listed as zero carbs.
