Hi Maeve. I'm too late to answer your question. So...what did you get?

I have an old (1996) Complete Carb Count book with the name of Dr. Art Ulene on it. He was a media doc at that time. That was when there weren't a bazillion websites covering LC eating. In fact, I suppose there wasn't even a web!

Anyway, I found that book useful mostly to determine carb counts for Brand name foods. Now that I eat nearly nothing that comes with a label, a carb count book is unnecessary. It's just handier to keep the general practice in mind: all the leafy vegetables you want, pretty much any green or colorful vegetable that grows above the ground, moderate cheese. You almost cannot overeat carbs on that plan. Other dairy, nuts if you eat them, berries and melon if you eat them...these are easy to look up online.

Best wishes.

use your phone. you can google just about any food very easily by entering name of food and calories. all nutritional info will pop up, and you can select serving size.
plus you always have your phone with you, unlike a book you have to lug around.

Before I got my smart phone I made my own list. Books have pages & pages of things I'd never consider eating. My list of things I actually eat is only 5 pages long. Now I check my phone if it's something I don't know. In restaurants I found the nutritional info thingy pointless - when I've checked, it had only calorie counts.

Thank you guys....actually my shopping expedition has been delayed because our central air conditioning went out. Not good in Georgia I can assure you! Repair guy has promised to be here this afternoon, so hopefully relief is in sight.
I'm actually glad I didn't buy a carb book anyway, after reading your post I realize I really don't need one!

The benefit I see to a carb counter book or list in the back of the Atkins books is that for someone new to low carbing, it can be enlightening to see side-by-side comparisons of different veggies or other foods such as different cheeses to be able to make more informed choices without looking up each item sepretly on an electronic device.
When I began I could run down a list of 30 veggies and see the difference in carb counts. Some have three times the carbs as others but who would know unless you saw them all.

Maeve, I've found I can find pretty much any food's carb count if I google (food name) carbs.

I hope that you are now cooler and dryer. We hit around 90 here in the TC, and it's still humid from yesterday's rain. Ugh.

I just looked up carb counts online and wrote the carb counts for veggies I might eat in a little notebook that I keep in my purse. Since I don't eat much in the way of carbs that works well for me instead of looking them up each time. Nope, a book isn't necessary at all.

My little book is a tiny pocket version that I picked up once at the checkout area. I love it.

You guys are the best! Thanks you for taking an interest.
Re air conditioning, the repairman said our compressor is frozen..
No relief yet as hubby (who, btw, is doing great on his 2nd day of LC) wants a second opinion since the estimate we were given was $4800.

Hi Maeve
Your DH sounds smart because that does seem way too high. At least $1000 too high for a whole new condensing unit.
Maybe the compressor can be replace for a lot less.

+1 for the phone suggestion.

Similar to MickiSue, I sometimes just google "(food name) nutrition" and it gives me a panel of info a bit like a food label. Over time you will just naturally remember what's good and just forget about what isn't.

Good luck.

Hi Guys,
I've de-carbed my kitchen, so we would have no chance of slipping up.
We are eating mostly different lettuces for now, going to venture into low carb veg. when I hit the grocery store.
I think the Internet is the way to go, although I also will make myself a list as per Bonnie's suggestion. Ok, let's be honest here, if I see a small carb counter book I will probably buy it! Haha
Happy LC eating Tuesday!

One of the benefits of having your own list is having the true carb count, not the official one. Mayo, for instance. According to the label (and probably the Internet, too), it has zero carbs per tablespoon. However, when you dig a bit further, you'll find it has 8.58g per cup - that's 0.536g per tablespoon. It can really add up.

I just made a chicken salad for today's lunch that makes 4 servings. It has 1 cup of mayo in it. Which means if I eat 1/4 of the salad, I've got at least 2.145g carbs. That doesn't include the celery & spices. Which aren't much, thank goodness! But I'll be serving a couple of veggie side dishes, 1 of which I can eat. So that means I can't have more than 1/4 of the salad.

Bonnie, It sounds like some labels are a little misleading. They should say that there are trace amounts on the label. Wonder how they get away with that? It's is very misleading to those depending on their truthfulness and accuracy.
Thanks for the heads up.
Maeve
