Default Avian Flu...

It's making it really hard to find chicken when I go to the grocery store. I eat a lot of chicken so I hope they get this avian flu under control. It's a terrible thing for the BC poultry business having to kill all those birds though.

Hi

Try fish and pork, if you eat it. Chicken is so low fat, I found when I ate alot of chicken, I stalled and couldn't lose weight. And hey, go crazy, try another kind of bird, I dunno, Like duck, goose,...um... what other birds do we eat? I heard turkey is stuck in the flu rut, too.

Mary, I do eat other meats like beef (hamburgers, steak, etc) and pork (prok chops, ham, ribs etc). But I just can't eat it as often as chicken. I haven't had a problem eating as much chicken as I have. I eat a variety of types of chicken and usually make a gravy from the fat/juices. I love turkey but yes, they are involved with this flu too. I absolutely HATE fish so that's not an option. As for other birds, I'm not fond of them. But thanks for the suggestions.

I just feel so bad for the farmers, and the peoples who have chickens as pets.
Very sad/icky situation.

Yes, I feel really bad for the BC poultry producers ... news reports say it could take as long as 6 to 8 months to recover from the cull, and return to previous production levels.

Yesterday they announced that even though there's no effect on production in the rest of Canada (yet), we can all expect a significant rise in the price of chicken .. and eggs too, no doubt.

Hi

I have a definite feeling about the industry that the prices for chicken will rise, at least in the near future.

Alli, do you eat shrimp or crab or anything? My roomie only really eats shrimp, but I turned her on to bacon wrapped scallops, too.

Good luck with your food choices

Love your "Kitty in a bag"!

I haven't had a problem finding chicken or turkey. I mostly shop in Westbank Alli, and the Extra foods had lots of both...I didn't go to the Save-On though. Extra foods in Kelowna should have ...too.
Good luck! ..This whole chicken thing is just dandy after the whole cattle industry thing...after the whole SARS thing in Toronto. We Canadians are having problem after problem. Securities to all these problems will have to be upgraded.

OH! Don't forget you can't eat salmon if it's farmed, and pork I'm sure in BC is less popular (we unfortunately know why)...

Vegetarian, anyone?

Mary...no fish or seafood for me. Don't like it. I'm picky.

Pam, I did see a little chicken and turkey in Save On...but their prices are rediculous. I keep forgetting there is an Extra Foods around. We don't go down that way very often.

According to what I've heard on the news (so it's not 100% reliable), the same precaution you take against salmonella will work against this avian flu virus: Cook well and avoid cross contamination.

I heard the same, Sylvain.

Would you like me to send some chicken out your way?

Check out M&M Meat shops. They have plain chicken (and some turkey), and in Ontario, it's about $20 for 3 lbs (not on sale).

Found some decently priced chicken and it's okanagan chicken. No cases up here yet so all is good.

Plus I cook my chicken properly so I'm not worried.
