Default Diet Success May Depend On Your Dna

DIET SUCCESS MAY DEPEND ON YOUR DNA

The results demonstrated that a diet that makes one individual lean and healthy might have the complete opposite effect on another. “My goal going into this study was to find the optimal diet,” Barrington said. “But really what we’re finding is that it depends very much on the genetics of the individual and there isn’t one diet that is best for everyone.”

The research team’s future work will focus on determining which genes are involved in the response to the diets. “One day, we’d love to develop a genetic test that could tell each person the best diet for their own genetic makeup,” Barrington said. “There might be a geographical difference based on what your ancestors ate, but we just don’t know enough to say for sure yet.”

I am finding I do well with Arctic circle things like fish, high fat dairy, and greens. Which fits my family genetics, according to my aunt who had some analyzing done.

For those interested in more, I learned a LOT from Death by Food Pyramid. The best account I have read about genetic influence on enzymes, and thus, the best food to eat individually.

Heh heh, turns out I know the fellow (David Threadgill) whose lab the report, "Diet Success May Depend on your DNA," came out of. He and my hubby (also a geneticist) are old friends. Good guy, good scientist, and honest about his work and results. Of course, they're doing studies in mice and such studies aren't always terribly transferable to human beings.

Still, we here on this forum have been saying all along that everybody has to find the WOE that works for them. Most of us just happen to believe that low carb works better for more people who have gotten FAT on a SAD diet than sticking with the SAD diet or trying to survive on fewer calories while getting more exercise.
