Question Some questions on PP - calories

Hi,
I'm doing Dr.Dahlqvist's plan, and I find it very much like Protein Power.
So I've been referencing Dr.Eades's blogs for info on optimizing my weight loss
and sticking with it, this time.I've done Atkins a long time ago and lost a lot
of weight, but stopped, can't remember why, it was a slow thing.

I have a few questions on the caloric requirements.
The plan I'm on does not mention any, and just says eat until satisfied, here is a list of foods, which is the way I like a plan.
I started doing it two weeks ago,
and find that my protein is around 70-100g,
carbs flutuate between 15-40 and around 70.
On the whole, I consume around 1000-1200 calories.
I find that I lose more when I consume 1000 calories, but also lose on 1100.
It seems the line is around 1300 where weight loss stops,
although I think it's too early to draw this conclusion.

I am happy with the losses, but I wonder if I'm hurting my metabolism by
consuming too few calories. I have basal req. of 1440 and I exercise regularly.
I put everything in fitday, and it gives me a requirement of 2200 calories ,
so it gives a 1000 calorie deficit!! I think that maybe the 1440 is way
overstimated for me, but I don't know...

Should I eat more, even if I don't feel like it? I'm only hungry in the morning, because I have only a glass of milk for breakfast, and I like the hungry feeling before lunch. It's kind of my fasting period. After that I eat anything I want to satiate me throughout the day. It always ends around the 1000-1200 calorie mark with the odd ~1300 day.

Let me know your personal experience with calories, should I just ignore them, since I'm not hungry? I do count on substituting the milk eventually if I stop losing, and maybe add some protein there, but for now I'm happy.

Cheers,
F.

According to Eades and in theory it is true, you will not lower your metabolism by eating low calorie if you are eating low carb. I personally have to eat lower calories in order to lose. However, I can also do what Eades says and eat unlimited calories, with carbs restricted, and maintain. Did you read his latest column?

I do not think you need to worry. You have very little to lose, and most people find they have to cut calories to lose the last 10 - 20 pounds.

I seem to always have to eat very little to lose -- the highest I've ever lost at was around 1400 cals. Most of the weight loss has been at 1200 calso or less, and most of that probably closer to 1000 cals. I have gone into maintenance multiple times and do not regain. I think that is proof the low calorie weight loss periods are not affecting my metabolism.

Thumbs up

Thanks a lot LessLiz!
I was reassured by your sentence:
"However, I can also do what Eades says and eat unlimited calories, with carbs restricted, and maintain."
Yes, I read the article on Dr.Eades blog, but I value personal experience,
as well, since there no specific studies on metabolism on a low-carb diet.
So, I'm glad someone has to same experience as me, on the calorie
note, because on the forums I see people losing at 1700+...

Just so to confirm, if I understood you correctly:
You see no "seesaw" affect between your periods of losing and
maintaining, e.g. when you go back to losing you find you don't have to
be lower calorie than the previous losing period; When you maintain
you go much higher than 1200 without gaining.

Is this it?

No seesawing. I recently posted about my experience in the Milestone forum.

There is research indicating that you will not gain on a low carb diet with excessive calories that is reported in Good Calories, Bad Calories. There is a person on this forum who ate 5000 low carb calories per day for a month to test that research. He gained nothing.

All doubts are the same size because they can all do the same damage.

Thank you for the kind words. Best wishes on your journey.
