I just tried sardines for the first time last week and I have never tried oysters....to me the sardines smell and taste just a bit more fishy than tuna. My boys disagreed, saying they smelled awful. I had them as patties too, so the other ingredients may have softened the taste. I really liked the patties and can see myself eating them once or twice per week, so I really don't see a necessity in trying them any other way. HTH

As a kid my Dad would either make a plate with Brunswick sardines straight out of the can, squeeze some lemon on them and serve with slices of tomato, slices of onions and avocado with bread or crackers or mash them up with diced onions, lemon and mayo also with bread or crackers.

When I don't feel like cooking or I am running late I make sure I always have cans of sardines ($0.99 per can) on hand and take cans to work with one lemon and just open and can, squeeze on some lemon and eat with veggies. Since I buy the ones packed in water. I have a tablespoon of olive oil for my fat.

I eat the bones too.

I started eating fresh sardines after being inspired to buy some by Dr. Atkins' lists of foods on the diet. I absolutely love them now - they're my favourite fish. I buy them fresh from a local good fish shop to eat the same day, fry them gently in olive oil with herbs, garlic and lemon juice, and serve. They are simply delicious!

You can just cook them as they come, or ask the fishmonger to fillet/bone them for you. I just buy them whole and gut/bone them myself, which only takes seconds, and is strangely enjoyable!

I learned how to do it here:

Thanks to Doreen for the sardine pate recipe. I'll try that.

I have hot and cold running cats, and it's a real challenge to eat sardines or tuna at my place...

I'm now eating sardines for breakfast at work. I'm on a very strict diet where a lot of former foods are now off limits, but sardines and other fish (other than tuna) are okay.

This morning I had tinned smoked trout. Marvelous! The sardines I'm still kind of "eh" on.
