Default Low Carb in the News

I was watching the late night news on Channel 10 (Melbourne) last night and there was a segment on a diet study the CSIRO had done. It was a 12 week study on low carb versus low fat. The low carb group lost more weight and were just as healthy as the low fat group.

The same study was mentioned in the free magazine they give out in the city ... can't remember what it was called.

I've emailed the person at the CSIRO to find out whether he has published his results. I'll let you know if I hear back from him.

The synopsis of his study is at:

http://www.csiro.au/promos/ozadvanc...ies12AtFat.html

You may want to hold back from emailing him as I'm sure he'll be bombarded with emails today.

I just found an article on the report in the Sydney Morning Herald:

http://smh.com.au/articles/2003/01/...3804416912.html

They did a low carb/low fat diet. It's a shame they didn't do low carb/moderate to high fat diet.

Hi Alison,

Yes, I agree it's a shame they didn't also have a group doing low carb, high fat. And they refer to it as "high protein, low fat" rather than low carb.

It seems the only difference in the two groups was the amount of carbs, which makes me think the high carb group must have had pretty low protein.

I remember hearing about the CSIRO study a while ago, and they said that because it was low calorie, that was the reason it worked.

One day they'll get it. I hope.

Roz

Hi Rosebud,

I was a little peeved that they mentioned Atkins, but the only similarity is low carb. Most low carb diets try to get a fair amount of good fats in the diet too. I guess people still can't get their head around fats being good for you, and not the enemy.

I read an article in the Melb Herald Sun that said the 'Low Carb' group was on 47% of calories derived from carbs and the High Carbs group was on over 60%. 47% Carbs is a heaps. Wonder if they'll ever do a real low carb study

Here's the link: http://heraldsun.news.com.au/common...5E24331,00.html

Whoops - it was 46% carbos for the low carb group vs. 63% carbos for the high carb group
