Default Marinara sauce with 2 carbs per 4 oz.

"Victoria" brand all natural marinara sauce
I found this 24 oz jar of sauce at Shoprite (Paramus NJ) today.

Ingredients: Imported italian tomatos, pure italian olive oil, fresh onions, fresh basil, fresh garlic, sea salt and spices

Nutritional FActs

Serving Size 1/2 cup
calories - 70
cal from fat - 35
fat - 4g
sat fat - 1 g
cholesterol - 0mg
sodium - 400 mg
total carb - 4g
total fiber - 2g
sugars - 3g
protein 5 g

I was very happy to find this, even though it was $4 a jar, the net carbs are even lower than plain tomato sauce! Plus I also bought Victoria Vodka sauce with similar nutritional facts and all natural ingredients, no HFCS or sugars!

Sounds good.

But how can 3 g of sugar and 2 g of fiber add up to 4 g of carbs? I guess I don't understand these labels at all!

Default Net carbs

The sauce has 4 carbs, 2 fibers, so subtract the fiber from the carbs to get net carbs. Fiber does not raise blood sugar so it can be subtracted.

The 3 g of sugar are natural tomato sugars, not added.

Marchbaby: Are you saying that we can subtract the carbs from the fiber listed on labels and use that "net" amount when counting our daily carbs?? I didn't know that.

You can subtract the fiber from the carbs to get the effective (NET) carbs...

I have the same sauce... and it rocks... very yummy..
I was suprised to see it as well...is alittle pricy but worth it...

yes, you can subtract the fiber from carbs to get the 'net carbs'. You can also subtract sugar alcohols like malitol that is in some of the low carb candies out there. Be careful though, malitol and some other sugar alcohols can can cause stomach upset to some folks.

Thumbs up

I have been using these sauces for a while. I love the vodka, marinara and fra diavlo sauces by Victoria. The marinara makes excellent pizza quiche! These are available at Stop and Shop stores in MA. I posted this in a thread for low carb tomato sauce, but I think it got lost in the shuffle...

One of my favorite recipes is to take boneless chicken breasts and layer on green peppers and onions, I overlay this with mozzarella cheese and vodka sauce. Bake it in the oven for 1.25 hours at 350 and voila an awesome meal! I highly recommend it!

I still don't see how 3 g of sugars, natural or not, and 2 of fiber come out to 4 carbs.
