Default Benfotiamine

I've been reading up on the great results of Benfotiamine and wondered if anyone here has tried it and what they thought of it?

Thanks, Nikki

I got it ( yeah, I promised not to buy any supplements, LOL), and started taking recently, 1 cap in the morning, so far don't see much changes, but I am swimming now 4-5 days a week, and this makes difference in my FBG. yesterday is was nice 109, which is very good for me.
I will report resultf of the benfotiamin after a months.

Benfotiamine (a lipid-soluble form of vitamin B-1) was developed in Japan in the late 1950's to treat alcoholic neuropathy, sciatica and other painful nerve conditions. It was patented in the U.S. in 1962, and has been in widespread use in Japan since 1962 and in Europe since 1992 with encouraging results.

This version is fat soluble, unlike natural B1 that is water soluble, Fat soluble vitamins can accumulate in fat tissues, so it is not better to take more IMHO.

I think it's important to share infos for the benefit of us all. Here what I've found about benfotiamine.

I have researched into this benfotiamine supplement. From what I've read until now it should be a standard drug for diabetes prophylaxis.

It acts as an glycation/caramelization inhibitor by blocking at least the three most important pathways at a cellular level.

The main component of benfotiamine is thiamine, a vitamin from the B group. When absorbed, benfotiamine will, so to say, morph into thiamine and so do its work.

It prevents/reverses/eases retinophaty.

It blocks damage caused by hyperglycemia to the cells.

It is fat soluble and readily bioavailable.

It has been used for diabetic treatment in Germany since the early 90s.

It has no shown toxicity, even at high dosages.

The best price/content ratio for a product I've found so far, is that of Milgamma, but there are surely cheaper generic ones. But the others I've found as supplements seem to be more expensive.

If you know/find something cheaper, I would be glad to know about it...

The before mentioned product is available in 100, 150 and 300 mg per tablet.

If you buy a benfotiamine supplemet, make sure that you can get it in a high dosage per tablet. studies have shown that the more, the better

Here an interesting document about benfotiamine:

Thiamine is one vitamin I've read that most diabetics are low in.

Benfotiamine has definitely helped me. If further studies confirm some existing evidence, benfotiamine may be of value to all diabetics, as it appears to block 3 of the 4 metabolic pathways in which high blood sugars lead to complications. It is very helpful in treating neuropathy as is alpha lipoic acid. Both supplements have long been used in Germany and have not been found toxic in studies.

Hi lazysailor

What is your dosage? For how long have you been taking it? With what did it help you?

I'm also taking it, 160 mg per day (2x 80mg), next time I will let it prescribe it, since the supplement is way overpriced compared to Milgamma.
